Bar stools - with a back or backless?

When it comes to preferred style of seating for your breakfast bar - do you like a bar stool with a back or no back?
As both types can lend themselves to a variety of interior styles, it's less a question of making sure your bar stool matches your interior design scheme and more a question of personal preference this time!
So - what, if any, do think the pros and cons of each style are? And which do you ultimately prefer?

Comments (37)This is mine in the house I just sold. it was £5 off Ebay (and my friend delivered it for me from Wales, happy days) My partner knocked the alcove into the wall and a space for the wine fridge. Comments (7)Comfort & design. We have the same as in the 2nd picture which are really comfortable to sit on and they look great too. So many we looked at especially with no back support whilst may look great are not that good to sit on for any length of time. When we have family/friends round they are more than happy choosing to spend an evening sat in the Eames style stool over our sofa. As we have an open plan kitchen/living/ dining area, we are also thinking of choosing a mix of colours in the same design to replace the chairs at our dining table....See Morewall mounted bar stools/swing out stools?
Comments (4)If you want the seats to swing out from the island be sure to check that the island is substantial enough to take the load, also that the island is well anchored to the floor. If you consider the arm is for example 2 feet long, then sitting on the extende seat will be the same as applying your full weight to a crowbar, two people sitting on one side would destroy a normally constructed island. Similarly, if fitted to a wall make sure that they are anchored well and that the wall structure is suitable. A nice idea to save space though...See More
