Window Treatment ?????

I have a narrow rectangular lounge. Window at one end of the room and patio doors at the opposite end. The room is 10' x 16' so is quite small. The major problem being that it is full sun most of the morning through the window and then full sun mid afternoon onwards through the patio doors so I need to protect the furniture from sunlight without making the room feel even smaller. I need inspiration. The carpet is a light natural colour and the 2 x 2 seater sofas are grey with a stone fireplace in the middle of the long windowless wall.

Hello Caron,

Have you considered a mix of blinds and shutters as we used in the image you've chosen to comment on? Keep the shutters the same colour as the wall to prevent the room appearing smaller, you could also extend the wall colour up to the ceiling in a lighter shade, creating a feeling of height.

Look at blinds in fabrics that diffuse light - the colour of your furniture may change over the years yet it's a natural and beautiful appearance to enjoy. Consider using paler colours in the room so any discolouration is less visible.

Hi, Sandra, In my opinion this would depend on how dark you need the room to be; if you need it dark for sleeping then I would suggest using a blind(roman or roller) inside the recess, and then having a more sheer curtain on a track going across the top of the entire wall -- you could use a pair of curtains for each window; if they are lightweight it wouldn't affect the radiator in the middle if you wanted to pull them back. The sheerish curtains would work with the overall feel of the room. Alternatively you could still have the blinds in the recess and the single track, with more tailored curtains -- one for each window, so when they are pulled back (with a holdback) there would be one on the left of the left hand window, and one on the right of the right hand window. Is there room for one or two 'flip-up' shutters in plywood, cut to triangular shape (one each side, hinged to sides, or single one hinged on bottom), raised and lowered by a simple cord, eyelet and cleat system? The whole window has an 'origami' look to it which makes one want to keep to crisp planes and avoid anything frilly. You could even have a different colour for each side...but, as I say, that would depend if the window is deep enough to accommodate the 'flaps' when open.

Wow! What an amazing space and fantastic opportunity to shape your new home. Which floor is it on in terms of needing privacy? I imagine there will be a requirement to do work to the ceiling to comply with fire regulations? If that is the case the windows will be recessed into the ceiling which may limit your options. Clearly with single glazed windows and no insulation to speak of on walls and possibly floors it would be ideal to save as much heat as possible escaping through the windows. I highly recommend Luxaflex ‘Architella’ pleated blinds. They make a huge difference. If privacy is an issue you could have day and night versions in one headrail. Good luck with this incredible project.

Blinds that sit within the frame, below the top arch, would be an option - either Roman blinds or wooden slatted blinds. Or if budget allows then Shutters would look fab!
