Hallway Shoe Cupboard Yay or Nay ??

Houzzers - Where do you stand on Hallway Shoe Cupboards ??

Many of us now take our shoes off when we enter our homes, mostly for cleanliness as well as for comfort & relaxation.

So, if you immediately take your shoes off as you come home and pop your slippers on, then you will probably have a whole pile of shoes, boots, trainers etc littering your hallway !!

What do you do with them ? We have had to put a rather wobbly rack in the sitting room which is jumbled up with shoes and looks awful.

But, recently I have noticed that there are some amazing luxury Shoe Cupboards which I would love - they are slim, come in stunning colours and are narrow enough to fit in any hall. A brand new one has just gone straight on my house "Wish List".

What do you think ? Maybe you have no need of a Shoe Cupboard by the front door as you keep your shoes on in your house and store your shoes in the bedroom. As always - vote and then explain with a comment.

A great question! In general I think the answer lies in what you do with your coats. You should ideally keep your shoes and coats together, but you don't want to crowd your entrance by having them too close to the front door.

If you have a narrow hallway even the slimmest of cupboards could become an obstacle. You also need to consider the practicalities of taking your shoes off/putting them on in a cramped space, which can be really annoying, particularly when there's more than one person coming in or going out. You want to avoid having to squeeze past a bulge of hanging coats before you've entered the house.

Therefore, it's best to keep your shoes and coats in the vicinity of the door but not too close. If you have an under stair cupboard this could be good solution (large pullout drawers work well). Or if you have a bigger house a designated cupboard off the hallway is a must.

When re-designing my client's houses we often spend a fair bit of time considering this issue. Sometimes we're lucky enough to have a small room off the hall designated for shoes, coats and broom cupboard etc.

If this isn't possible then I call under the stairs as a good option.

You're right an under stairs cupboard is the perfect place for both shoes and coats, however. mine is also a tiny cloakroom with loo, so sadly very little room for coats and they always get in the way of the basin !

I think I need one of your clients lovely big houses so I can have a separate room for all the clutter !!

Hi, the feet are on all of the cabinets at the end of every run when we hit an appliance or just came to the end of the run. Some of the photos up thread were taken before the feet had been added since they were literally the last thing to go on. We actually used the ikea deco strip to create the moulding but we didn't use it the way Ikea anticipate. We fixed it sideways. It is supposed to be fixed the other way around but that look would have been too "modern" for this kitchen. If I was designing the kitchen again I wouldn't bother with the ikea deco strips and would have used pre cut wooden moulding and then painted it. This would have enabled me to have slightly deeper moulding at the ceiling line. At the time of ordering the kitchen I didn't know that we would find an exact paint match for the ramsjo range though. The wooden worktops were incredibly good value IMO. They are american black walnut (butcher block) and are from wood and beyond here worktops This thread doesn't show it but at the same time as doing the kitchen we did the adjoining snug and the large utility room. In the utility room I used the ikea walnut worktop which was ridiculously cheap because it's not solid walnut. There is no way you could ever know it isn't solid though unless you installed it. Its perfectly good. ikea karlby worktop The flooring is my big mistake with this kitchen. As the thread shows, this wasn't originally going to be a complete kitchen refit and it spiralled out of control somewhat. The flooring was being replaced due to a water leak and we went for laminate due to cost. Its from kaindl and as laminate goes its decent stuff with bevelled edges, narrow planks and texture matched finish BUT it was a mistake. It looks great and when you tell people its laminate they have to get down really close to tell but it damages very easily and is scratched, particularly underneath the kitchen table where the kids scrape the chairs in and out (even with felt pads on the feet). If you drop anything on it and it chips thats a problem. This wouldn't have been a problem with wood. I've never had laminate before and hadn't realised it would be this difficult to live with but I wouldn't do it again, I would bite the bullet and install the hardwood. The big benefit of the laminate was that we could have underfloor heating mats which are nice in the winter. The lighting is from Jim Lawrence. The style is called Ava. I love the lighting too and the shape of the glass echos the shapes in the wallpaper. pendant lights The kitchen table was our old ikea oak table which we'd had for ten years. we stained the top in dark walnut and painted the legs white to match the cabinetry. I haven't got a precise figure for everything but in total with the appliances and with the snug and also the large utility room included (which in itself has 14 cabinets) flooring and the decorating in each of those rooms and a hallway, plus new glazed doors through to the hallway and the dining room we spent about £15,000 (a big chunk of this on lovely ikea interest free credit though!). This includes all labour, fitter, plumber (we changed out two radiators for a nicer style), electrician, decorator. We could have saved further money by doing some of the installation ourselves and doing our own decorating (but then it would probably have resulted in selling the house due to divorce!)

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...

Tee hee about the loo seats ! Best decisions - going to view the derelict property that was found way back in an old box at the estate agents and then putting in a ridiculously low offer thinking it was a start point to negotiate upward - but they actually accepted it !! Yay !! Worst decision moving in with a toddler while renovating ! No way I'd ever do that again!!! On the design front - as I'm in the biz I guess that helped with the flow of the place - so recommend if you do bring a designer (or concept planner like us) onboard, ask them for input throughout ! It can make for a much more cohesive home !

HI Lornarose I prefer the original plan for the following reasons - If you move the kitchen to the middle section you will end up with a corridor kitchen. I have a corridor kitchen which one must walk through to get to the dog-leg dining room, and I hate it. When my children were young they were going backwards and forwards through the kitchen. Now they are adult (and the same applies to guests too) and want to chat with me while I'm cooking, everyone stands in the corridor kitchen and gets in my way. When they realise they are in my way they go and into the sitting room and I end up stuck in the kitchen on my own. If you put the dining room or snug in the middle section, those rooms will too end up as a corridor, they will become a means of passing through to the kitchen at the end of the house and you may find you no longer use the space. Do you want to be walking past your dining room table/sofa to get to the kitchen? In your original plan the middle space is used for what it is - a corridor - which also usefully houses the services and gets them out of the way of the other rooms and it also gives access to the courtyard. When someone walks into the kitchen/diner then they can turn one way for the kitchen or the other way for the dining room, or past the island to the back doors. There is no need for anyone, apart from the cook, to go into the kitchen area although kids being kids they will do so. I think the design gives you the best layout for dividing the kitchen and dining space in the most practical and user friendly way. Re: the sitting room at the front of the house - in the space you suggested for the cloakroom and laundry you could build a massive, walk-in toy cupboard where you can chuck everything at the end of the day and the space becomes a grown-up space. When the children are older you can take out the cupboard and use the space for something else. Why not print off the different plans and draw on lines to indicate the movement of traffic through the spaces.
