Living room layout

Looking for advice on where to put sofas and a TV stand in my new living room to maximise the space that we have. There is a feature log burner fireplace half way on the wall on the right and the aerial points are on the right at the top and bottom either side of the fire. Many thanks in advance!

To bring the best out of your lounge area, we'd suggest measuring any fixtures and fittings that are staying (such as the log burner) and posting them here, so that designers from the Houzz community can fully explore your potentials! Furthermore, if you can provide measurements of the room, this will also help.

There are plug sockets on every wall, two on the wall with the bit that comes out where the fireplace used to be, the layout image is just what I took from the estate agents listing for my house when I bought it :) I love the idea of adding the fireplace back in! It does look tricky! One thing could be to lose that awkward corner with the tables and lamps and instead put in a large corner sofa and coffee table. You could perhaps then lose the need for the other side tables. You could put one of those large lamps with a long curved base behind the sofa

Our advice to you is to embrace some dark shades! Not only can dark-coloured walls give you the cosy feeling you desire but it will simultaneously make the room feel bigger as it soaks up any shadows. Here is an example of a room where we have encouraged darker shades: Having a darker wall behind your TV will also help camouflage it so it's not a main focal point. We have done this previously and added panelling to draw the eye away from the TV and instead to the featured wall behind it. Regarding sofa's it can be unavoidable to put a main sofa in front of the TV however having another sofa on either side of the original sofa can lead to a rather claustrophobic feeling. Plus you don't want to walk into the room to be immediately greeted with the back of a sofa. Have you considered multiple armchairs or footstools that can be used as chairs when entertaining? These are more manoeuvrable so you can move close the log burner in the winter or further to the windows in the summer. Hey Eleanor, Congratulations on your new home, it is gorgeous! You have a really great sized space here, there are a couple of Interior Design tips and tricks that can help you with this space: one is focal point and the second is something we call functional zoning. The first helps you decide where you want your eyes to settle when you walk in the room - i.e fireplace. The second is thinking about what other activities you might need to take place. Do you need a desk area? Do you have children and they need a small play area? I would recommend looking at some built ins on either side of the fireplace, this would give you storage, a place for your TV as well (eye height would be key for comfort). A large corner sofa would work great in this space, with a console table, large comfy chair and a large area rug would really help ground the space as well. (always go big on the rug). Don't be afraid to bring everything into the room a bit, it will make the space feel much more cosy. I don't know what your needs are for the rest of the space, but you could have a storage unit with toys and games or books (near your Juliette balcony). There would also be ample space to have a nice desk area, built onto the wall on the other side of your double doors. Thank you for your help, I have attached a photo of the lounge, there are no fixtures remaining except the log burner.

The wall either side of the log burner is 3.2m.

The wall on the left is 2.8m and 1.5m to the double door leaving to the family room.

The wall with the window on is 3.6m.

Great Sophie,

Could you transfer all of your measurements onto the floorplan you have? If possible, measure the log burner wall width, door widths and any other minor walls in the room that may have been missed.

Apologies I don't have all of the measurements, I have added what I had and marked on areas where there is something obstructing e.g. Fire

Sorry for all the questions!!

Cn you give me some idea of how you use this room? Is it for entertaining or is it your main family reception? Is it the TV room? If so, what size? Do you have a desk / computer to go in? Are there any shelving units? Do you need a dining table to fit in here? What's the room through the double doors? Should they work together?

What's your style? Are you looking for an L-shape sofa or a 2/3 seater and chairs? How may people need to sit comfortably in here?

If you can give me as much information about how you use this room, I can recommend a layout for you.

Hello,

This will be our main family TV room, the TV size is 50 inch and need to seat around 6-8 people.

The room through the double doors will be a children's playroom.

We have looked at a range of sofa styles, we are just very undecided on the best layout so hence haven't decided on a style of sofa. There is currently a sofa opposite the double doors into the room but this means that there is a lot of space behind this up to the window - it is currently filled with a piano but this will no longer be here and we have a separate office so there will be no desk or dining table etc in there.

We would like to have some kind of shelving unit/bookcase in the room.
