What colour bifolds/windows for red brick extension?

Hi
What colour Origin bifolds/windows would you suggest for this red brick extension? (The red brick has been matched against the existing right side extension - I had to look twice when I saw it against the back of the house bricks!) I'm thinking a mid grey rather than anthracite or black. Also, we need to replace the top windows too (plus bathroom window in centre that is hidden by tree). What do you think? Many thanks

Hi I agree with you on the mid - light grey, makes a change from the anthracite grey that everyone seems to go for. We supply and install Origin.. here is the RAL swatches..

I used F&B Light Grey for my windows on brick house. It works really well and I have the same colour inside which is cost effective.

Go for the cheapest option, it's only a door and a window. As you are planning to have alot done at the same time, spend your money wisely. You will already be adding value to your home by adding another room and off road parking. A developer wouldn't spend more on a renovation than they could recoup back on the sale. A friend had 2 electronic operated velux windows with rain sensors put in for their extension and they have never used them! As for their bi fold doors they have banned their children from using them! ( at a recent children's party, granny was in charge of opening and closing doors to let the kids in and out!) Their five grand door is too precious to be even used.

Hello Brian, As suggested above, we find that the overall effect is more cohesive if you match the bi-fold doors to the current window colour.

Tani I haven’t been on Houzz as much so not sure where you are on renovation but seen you’re looking at cost effective options. I just wondered if it would be nice as well as cheaper if instead of bifolds you had multiple glazed single doors with brick pillars in between? I can’t find a pic but I’ve seen pics of this on a high end commercial to residential period conversion where I presume they wanted to retain the original openings which were probably windows before but they’d taken the lower bricks out so the windows could be doors. It was a great industrial kitchen living space with lots of exposed brick but lots of light from the glazing.

Do you have a picture? Just that different colours suit different periods and styles. I find a soft greeny grey looks good with period red brick, as below.

Thank you your house looks beautiful inside & out! I definitely think the light grey works well against the red brick...there is a house similar style to ours down the road with black windows & it is not my cup of tea at all. Thank you again I appreciate your help :)

You're welcome. I teach colour theory so it's a bit of an obsession of mine. I was clear that I wan't a grey that had warmth and the Farrow and Ball one had a tinge of green which I prefer to the cool blue/greys that are very popular. Also, we opted for timber windows that are sprayed in a factory, they can be repainted in the future which is something we wanted. It has been a godsend as when plastering I can actually 'cut in' with the window paint (Teknos) and get a perfect finish. Good luck.

That's great to know, thank you. The window man is delayed so it gives me more time to look at pics online! I agree about a green/grey. Do you think if we got the same colour windows (rather than white) for upstairs they will look ok against the white? We need to repaint at the top but I think we should stick to white like all of the other similar style houses on our road. Thanks again :)

If you're not replacing the upstairs windows, you could see what they look like white against the downstairs ones, and then decide. Or, are you also replacing those? I think all the same colour is a good idea if possible. All of the houses on our cul-de-sac have dark brown wood windows, so I was conscious that ours would be different. Then I thought 'hell it's our house, we want it to look right' and so went ahead. No issue with the neighbours, they like them.

Yes we are replacing all of the windows upstairs too. The windows at the front of the house could also need replacing but we will likely do that later to keep costs down now. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

Colour is very subjective LTS. The window company that you use should hopefully have a colour swatch/samples available for you to put to your brickwork and that should help you make an informed decision. The good news is that most of the the lighter greys will complement your white render on the top half of your home. So your main focus in my opinion is your brickwork colour to window colour. Please post an update with your finished article to help others moving forward and the very best of luck!

Thank you for your advice Designer Range it is much appreciated. There is a lovely new build on the way to school that is red brick with lighter grey window top (not frames) which looks beautiful. I will post updates...

Hi!

For our latest project we have recently specified Painswick Grey (nearest RAL 7038) for all the windows and the front door is painted in satin RAL 7031. Attached are the images. Hope this helps.

Hi - we still haven't chosen the window colour yet! Unfortunately the local window company would not allow us to bring the colour swatches home to hold up to the brickwork so have ordered one from Origin. A light grey is still our preferred colour choice at the moment.

Origin colour charts arrived but a whole sheet of greys (RAL 9006 - 9009) is missing. Waaaaahhhhh :(

Oh no how frustrating!! Did you not mention to Origin that those colours were vital? Surely if you are going with your local trades, they should supply the colours for you to see?

Hi Croydon Windows - I expected the chart to contain all of the RAL colours. I think someone may have torn that sheet out.

Good point about one of the local window companies - they've been quite a disappointment. We are also in communication with another local one so keep your fingers crossed!

I love soft blues and greens going towards the grey unsaturated type colours with red brick. If the red is more towards an orange then the greens work better and if more towards the pink/purple then blues look great. I'm getting so bored of dark grey doors and windows! Be brave and use some colour!

What do you think of these?
We have narrowed it down to two being the mid & dark colour of the pics with 3 samples. My husband & I prefer different ones!

Thank you colourhappy - that one is RAL 9007 (grey aluminium) & the other one is RAL 7015 (slate grey).
