extractor solutions for open plan kitchen

in the early stages of planning a new kitchen which will be a large open plan area with high veluxed ceiling. Looking for suggestions for extractor fans as hoping to place my hob on the island unit but ceilings will be far too high to house an extractor. Do pop up extractors work in such large open plan areas? open to suggestions.

Hi Nicola,

Yes pop up extractors do work in large open plan areas. They usually come with the options of remote or built-in motors which can extract air at a rate of up to 647 m3/h.

The alternative to pop up extractors are the new hobs with built in extraction. I haven't got any experience with these yet but have a current customer who is looking at one from Bora. They certainly look amazing and the marketing material reads well.

Many thanks for your reply. Good to know it will still work in a large area, and i'll check out the new hobs you mention with built in extractors.

We are often approached by clients who are creating an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. To overcome some of the issues we make cabinetry which can hide away the usual clutter found in a busy kitchen. Bi-fold and pocketing doors are great in this instance as ovens and even sinks can be hidden away, making the cabinetry seem more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen. Our clients love being able to change the look of a space in an instance! It is crucial to make sure you choose your appliances carefully, i.e. a quiet dishwasher and a good extractor are of huge benefit here. As long as the space is thoughtfully planned there is no reason that it shouldn't work functional and aesthetically.

I’m struggling to find a way to have a kitchen/island (really would like an island to have useable counterspace), generous dining table (seating for at least 6 people) and a sitting area in the same room if we don’t open up the wall between the current front and back living rooms. Would it make more sense to have part of the garage incorporated into the kitchen? There is a slight difference in floor level though between the garage and kitchen (Step down into the garage). Or block up the current kitchen door and have the access to a dining/kitchen through the current back living room space and then somehow fit in a dining table and seating area?

Hello, I completely understand where you are coming from! Firstly always go for what works for you and how you will use the kitchen. There is no point in re-modelling your kitchen if it doesn't work for your lifestyle. If you do a lot of cooking as you have explained, it is definitely better to have the cooker extractor fan to duct out to remove the steam ( as a re-circulating extractor only removes grease ) otherwise the grease is removed but the steam is still in the room. Are you having an extension or just knocking down the back wall and installing doors? Do you have a basic plan/ drawing of where you plan to have your kitchen? I had an extension last year and although I love my new open plan kitchen/ living area there are a few niggles that I hadn't thought of especially once I started using the kitchen. Firstly, although I said to my builder I wanted to duct out ( at the early stages ), this was not dealt with until later in the building stage and when the time came, we couldn't duct out so we had to have a re-circulating cooker extractor and install a separate extractor fan in the pitched roof to pass building regs. The position of the extractor fan is a bit useless as it is quite far from the cooking area but that was a best place for it. If you are cooking for a long time on the hob which causes a lot of steam e.g., making pasta, stews etc, a few times the steam just collected at the base of the hood and started dripping back down to the hob and pots! If the hood was ducted out I'm sure this would not be an issue and my hood was not a cheap hood. This is not the fault of the kitchen designer as they stressed the importance of ducting out right at the start. The location of my kitchen is in the existing part of the house and the extension is the living area with sliding doors across the whole width and 3 velux windows, the problem I have here is that the kitchen area is quite far from the doors and windows, when I open the ovens ( one is a steam oven ) and I also have a hot water tap, so much steam comes out from both, the steam just lingers around that area. With the hot water tap, the steam hits the bottom of the wall cabinets and just travels along the base of the all the wall cabinets. As my hob is on the same side, if my cooker hood ducted out, I could just turn it on and that would help with extracting the steam but it doesn't. Generally I do open the velux windows and doors for a short while to air the room, even in the winter. If you are having an extension and having velux windows, if budget allows, I really recommend getting a solar panelled velux window which has a remote control to open and close ( rather than using a stick ), it's so handy, I have 3 velux but only 1 is solar panelled, I always have that one open slighly to air the room, even in the winter and especially when I am cooking. The best thing is it also has a rain sensor so it automatically closes when it starts raining, I didn't even know it had this function until it started closing when it rained :-).

Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

Hi Nicola,

Yes, popup extractors do work well, and their are now quote a wide range on the market, including options from well known brands such as Neff who are also now bringing out a hob incorporating extraction too. Other manufacturers (including Elica) have such hobs incorporating extraction, and I have been impressed by the quality of extraction, though if it is possible to vent outside rather than "recirculate", I would recommend it. When using either pop up or "hob built in" extraction, you should be aware that the units can take up a fair bit of space within an island, and will limit the units which can be used below and/or behind the hob. Care should be taken when designing for these solutions, though any good kitchen designer should take this into account. Depending on the kitchen manufacturer, some (Nobilia amongst others) are now designing kitchen units specifically to incorporate these new technologies - indeed, some designs can now build these in using the space under units & behind plinths to house the fans etc, minimising wasted space.

As an alternative, there are a couple of companies (including Blanco and a couple of other specialists) who will design and build bespoke conventional Island hoods with tall chimney stacks to fit installations like yours. These are not cheap, but may be suitable if you wish a more traditional offering.

Finally, if you are prepared to accept recirculating extractors rather than vented, there are a huge range of suspended extractors available like the Elica Pearl or various from Faber / Best Hoods which can cope with being mounted in galleried spaces.
