Living room and dining room advice
Any help with layout/design of living/dining room to make it look more cohesive and brighter. The room is rectangular shaped with poor lighting due to it being mid terrace. I like a relaxed bohemian/eclectic look however realise my current set up is far from this

Comments (9)A Roman blind is a good idea or curtains that hang outside of the window recess when open to allow maximum light to pour in. Whichever you choose, make sure they are hung high near the ceiling to make the ceiling feel higher up. What do you use the conservatory for? Is the door in the second photo the main entrance into the room? Would the table fit comfortably nearer the window end of the room instead? Then the sofa could go to the other end of the space - not sure if it fits. It's hard to see how the layout works from the photos and without the measurements or a floor plan. Alternatively, would the sofa fit it you turned it so that it faces the centre of the room rather than the window? I'd hang the seaweed mirror above the sideboard or behind the sofa (depending on final layout) and change the floor lamp to one which reaches over into the living space. Comments (4)In addition, you could also hard wire the table lamps and look at dimmable lights. There are various downlighters calculators online to check that you have sufficient lighting for the rooms purpose based on room size and ceiling height. Downlights don't need to be in a grid formation and you may want to look at lighting your cabinet and bookcase (or their replacement) for example. For the dining room I would choose the light based on the table i.e. If you're getting another long table maybe a linear light would work and make sure it's large enough for everyone to be able to see what they're eating! Comments (15)I like the room. Personally I would go for a dark colour on the tv wall so the tv etc blends in. Rather than buy a new rug I would spend the money on a cane and rattan chair, there are a few around ATM at really reasonable prices and you can pick up velvet curtains cheaply. I would also add another large plant. I couldn't get a wall colour similar to the one in the other pic but maybe look at something like this or just the cabinet colour. 6 years agoIt's a pretty cool room already :) For me personally, the 2 rugs clash. I would remove/change the striped rug, and also get a more unique dining table. I'd hang the gorgeous mirror above the table too and get a low hanging light fitting centred over it. I'd cluster all your art behind the sofa, and if budget allows, buy a large/tall cabinet to hide your TV and speakers in. Finally, I love your little reading nook, and would be tempted to add a seat and light if possible.

6 years agoI agree with Jen re the rug and grouping the small art and also think you have some great things! I would maybe look for a kilim to tie in with the Persian. I've only had a quick look but would add some colour although slightly muted and go for a design with curved shapes rather than angular. I'd change the cushions on the sofa, maybe look for small rectangular ones and add colour and pattern. You could ty a textured throw over the back/arm of one armchair. Maybe add a faux sheepskin over one of the eames chairs and maybe a mid century ceramic vase for the dining table?

6 years agoMinnie I love the lamp! I will take a look at your suggestions and repost pics soon. I love the kilim rugs however again find it difficult to locate one that doesn't clash with the Persian rug (see pic for close up).
I kept the cushions plain because of the very patterned rug. Any ideas of which patterned ones will work will be appreciated.
Also the mirror was kept close to the back door to enhance the light, not sure if moving it will be beneficial from a light point of view?

6 years agoI agree, what do you think of the layout? I love that light too, it's from rockett st George. In theory having a mirror opposite the window will maximise light but you don't want a mirror on the short wall! I do like it where it is but wasn't sure if it was blocking the door? Is the colour in the rug blush pink? In terms of cushion pattern it depends how far you want to go with the bohemian look. If you just want a little pattern then I'd look at the patterns in the rug, floral, quatrefoil. You also have a lace type pattern in the centre and some ikat prints or maybe some geometrics would work too. The last pic is showing rug patterns together but if you weren't sure on this the sheepskin would work well on the floor Or a plain rug picking up one of the rug colours

6 years agoAlso I've bought fantastic second hand rugs off eBay. The seller is called A2zrugs-uk. Or just look up Persian rug on eBay and you will see they are the main seller. I find second hand rugs to have a lot more character and bohemian style. I bought this one for £40.

6 years agoSo think your mirror should go behind your dining table and I agree re your plants. Why don't you busy up your table a bit too. Style it up with coffee table books, plants, candles, whatever you fancy. In my case all of the above.
