Hi, just wondering how you managed to get the cove lighting without dropping the ceiling???

We lowered the ceiling at the perimeter of the room.

I'm surprised that none of the previous comments have asked about your furnishings and upholstery. Nor have they inquired about your preferred style of furnishing, contemporary, modern or traditional. What is the overall effect you want to achieve? What kind of light does the room get through the day? When is the room used most often and by whom? What activities take place in the room on a day to day basis? What does the furniture look like? Once you establish that, only then can you begin to decide on the colour scheme. Red may be cozy, but, depending on the shade, it can also be stimulating, even raising your heartbeat and body temperature. That's why it's often used in dining rooms and restaurants (to make you eat more). If you want a restful room, think about using a different shade of green or a blue-grey or blue. They will be more relaxing. The images provided by Jen Tindall use gold and will be warm and uplifting either by day or night. At night, the room will be suffused with a lovely mellow glow, especially if your lighting relies on table lamps with soft shades. I recommend reading a book by Angela Wright on colour. You'll find lots of useful information to guide you. It's a lovely room, with wonderful architectural features. My only suggestion is perhaps to add a corbel at each end of the arch if there is space. This will make it look less like a later alteration to what would have most likely been a dividing wall between 2 smaller rooms. Enjoy the process of designing the lounge and don't rush decisions.

It seems you are getting a mid century style tables. Your fireplace is mixture of traditional and modern details, balustrade in the background is traditional. You are looking at the light fittings that are very modern. To me it seems that you have to decide on what style you want to go with. The wall colour definitely doesn’t suit mid century/ industrial look . I would go for inspiration to your artwork of “ pebbles “ , those colours are beautiful but don’t go to dark. If possible get some one to help you with fireplace and make it look more Industrial. As far as lighting goes, use pendants in the corners above side tables or TV so you don’t bump in it all the time. Have some table and floor lamps but be careful with the style , they don’t have to match but at least they should belong to similar style. Your room seems large so don’t buy lots of small pieces of furniture, go large and only what is necessary.

How faithful to the period are you hoping to keep your renovation? Many homes from this time would have only had coving in "the good room" and as such it would be totally in keeping to leave the other rooms without. If you do go ahead and install I would definitely go with your plan of keeping the design simple and without too many curves (curves would be more in keeping in a Victorian style home). Good luck!

I agree with Victoria - it all depends on the house. If it’s a Victorian property with high ceilings and the original coving has been ripped out, then yes - replacing it would be great. However if it’s a more modern property with lower ceilings, don’t add something that wouldn’t have been there. Personally I really don’t like it when modern properties have had fake historic features added - it looks a bit odd, and it could even devalue your property.
