re-design for photographic art studio closet

I have a closet with double door entry (doors open out into ride rather than slide across) and want to transform into shelving for storing mat boards/ handmade papers etc. and also vertical slots for framed photographs. I have a narrow vertical space (as tall as the closet) on the far left of the closet that I want to utilize that is recessed into the wall.

Swing out doors should make this easy. Are you looking at DIY or having a company come in?

I'm looking to have wooden shelving that is sturdy enough to support my framed photographs and will likely have someone come in to do it.

I could see a fake floor platform constructed in front of the windows, going across the entire width of the flat. At the left side of the platform, put in a storage wall from the column back towards the flat door. Then, put a dining table or desk on the top of the platform. Build a slide out platform for the mattress. Although you are only looking at a small double, I would build the sliding platform sufficiently deep to hide a full sized bed (5-6 feet). If you had extra space, you could install hinged doors to access the storage space hidden under the far edge of the raised area. In the floor level area in front of the platform, use easily moved comfortable chairs that you could just push out of the way when you wanted to slide out the mattress. (Poang chairs from IKEA would be ideal). If you wanted an extra chair for company, consider a canvas sling chair like you would see at the beach which would store in a space scarcely more than an inch deep If you are looking for ideas, consider spending a few hours viewing boats at one of the London area marinas that sell canal boats. After looking at a few canal boats, your flat will look absolutely spacious! Just curious, if you wouldn't mind sharing, where is your flat and how much was the purchase price? (approx is fine)

As someone who taught Textile design on a degree course (before retirement) and prior to that worked in a famous national gallery, I have extremely eclectic taste. I have work painted by myself, work collected from other artists, limited edition prints, framed ephemera, and even two very large antique Victorian watercolors in gold frames - which I wouldn't probably buy these day, but do provide a bit of "weight" and gravitas in rooms. I like to put them against ultra modern lighting and pieces of furniture to give a bit of edge and conversely, put modern art against a couple of pieces of antique furniture we have.

Hi csg1 - I'm in nearly the same position. First house I own, Victorian Terrace and I'm looking for prints / art to stick on the wall. There's nothing wrong with Ikea or other large retailers but a lot of their stuff is a bit obvious for me (of course it's designed to appeal to a wide audience) and reminds me a bit to much of furnished rental homes. As Lampert Dias says it does depend on where you are - I'd check out what artists you have locally (through galleries or open studio events) but try to see if you can buy from them direct. Artists like Julia Dumbarton that I like often produce their own prints and frame them for you - they're not a lot more expensive than the big retailers. If you're in the UK then you can also check out the National Galleries and Societies, many of them have their own cutom print facilities. Tate Galleries, The National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society (scientific prints from them are great of birds, plants, butterflys etc.) or the prints from national collections of photography, science and society. Then the other day I found the Saatchi Art website which has new artist collections. The originals are mostly way out of my price range but a lot of them also produce framed prints. Haven't bought anything off them yet but it seems a really good source of more unique / unknown / contemporary work. Just remember to if the cost of framing is included - that'll add £50 to a lot of prints.

A good wide angle lens to avoid distortions, a tripod, knowledge of white balance (essential if there are lights on, or varying light sources), and ability to use the camera manually rather than auto. A flash is useful too.. Point upwards to the ceiling. Also, lights on shouldn't be a rule...it really should depend on the room and light type, for example side table lamps can add atmosphere and warmth to the shot. Often lights render the image too yellow though (this is where knowledge of adjusting white balance manually comes in), and can appear as a big glaring blob on the photo. I would avoid ceiling lights unles they are small spotlights/down lighters. And get the composition right....usually a photo taken from the corners of a room works best. Detail shots (different lens needed) are sometimes required, but I don't really get why estate agencys sometimes include a photo of a vase of flowers...

Then I recommend having a custom closet company - Of course I'm going to recommend Closet Factory if there is one in you area, as that who I work for- come in and help. You want a floor based system and a company that offers and backs their lifetime guarantee. Check their Houzz reviews and if they have any yelp reviews. I recommend staying a way from a cleat based wall hung system they don't hold up the weight over time.
