I've been debating about posting this for quite some time now, but feel that it is an important topic to share as it's one of those crucial questions we all ponder at some point: "Why should I spend money on something that I can find for a lot cheaper elsewhere - a kitchen for example?" I was recently asked this very question by a potential client who put our kitchen quote in front of me together with an “off the shelf” manufactured kitchen quote, side by side, to compare. Unsurprisingly the manufactured kitchen came out cheaper, however I noticed they had not included worktops or installation (it’s always worth checking this in any quote you get from one of the mass kitchen manufacturers). I must admit it’s always interesting when your work is compared to another’s, but even more so when it’s a company with standards that are a lot different to that of a handmade bespoke business. It’s a bit like comparing a Primark fashion item with an outfit you have commissioned from a bespoke dressmaker – both garments fulfil the same purpose in giving you something to wear, but one is likely to be better quality, a better fit and, most importantly, give you an individual look and style that you won’t see replicated at every event you attend. Everyone knows that you can buy a kitchen online or in store for a fairly cheap price. 'Cheap' being used loosely as it is still your hard earned cash and we're still talking over £3000 here. There is nothing wrong with buying this type of kitchen if it suits your lifestyle, your personal taste or your bank balance. However it is un-fair to directly compare handmade work to that of a mass manufactured piece. Also handmade and bespoke needn’t mean paying 'extortionate' prices. If you shop around for the right “maker”, checking their credentials, looking out for testimonials from satisfied customers and perhaps arranging to visit someone who has already experienced that business’s service, in much the same way as you would if you wanted that special dress or outfit, then you will be surprised at how reasonable the price can be for something that is truly tailored to you, unique and handmade – a quality purchase. You need to consider 2 important points. 1. Raw material sizing will restrict how high you can make your units. You also need to consider transport. Its one thing to make a 3m high tall unit (not possible as most material sheets max out at around 2.4-2.5m) but how do you transport it. How do you bring it round corners in houses etc? 2. Special sizing and slab painted doors are not what you would find in sheds. You need to look at independents or bespoke cabinet makers and yes you would have to pay for specially made furniture.

Hi Kat, the tiles were riven quartzite tiles (see link) and they weren't too pricey but I would go for honed as the riven were very riven. We ordered far too many and selected the ones we wanted. Make sure they are sealed before grouting. The paint is Light Bronze Green and I chose it to bring out the violet tones in the pale oak. Got the shelf idea from an old Conran book and it is so useful. The majority of carcases are made out of MFC. Most people choose white. You buy them according to the size you want and depending where you get them from they could offer purpose made sizes as opposed to the standard 150mm, 300mm, 350mm and so on in increments of 50mm. There is normally no 700mm as standard but as said can be produced depending in where you opt to to get them from. Many now come with soft close as standard. Most are flat packed so you have to assemble them and put the cams and pegs in place but some are supplied semi assembled (like the ones we sell) so can be put together in 2 minutes. The cost of the carcases will vary depending on colour, flat packed, semi assembled or fully assembled. The doors have to be manufactured. They‘re not just cut to size as you say. You need to know what size you want before ordering them as you can’t just cut one down that’s too big. Worktops are a minefield of choice from solid timber, laminate, Quartz or solid surface. All vary in price. I would not bother getting carcases from one supplier and then doors from another. Small independent suppliers in the main work out no more expensive than large DIY stores. You need a kitchen company to assist you.
