Opening up kitchen to drawing room

Hi,
I live in a Victorian Detached house and was wondering if any one has made their kitchen and drawing room ( original features in both , contemporary design) open plan?
These are both large rooms and an opening through could have glazed double doors or remain open.
I am keen to do this as it would be more sociable and much lighter.
Your thoughts ideas would be welcome.

Hi Mo,

Your idea for your property is actually a widely executed concept in Victorian properties. Below is an example of the space completely open with a "proscenium" arch.

Maintaining an arch between the two space provide a threshold, so that the two don't merge entirely, but still giving you feeling of open plan.

Below is another idea where they have created two openings, to provide more of threshold, but still maintaining a visual connection between the two spaces.

If the wall you are trying to open up is parallel to the street, it is most likely a structural supporting wall, which will require some investigation by a structural engineer before a builder attempt to remove it.

I agree with the above. If you can afford it, I'd knock down the kitchen wall and go open plan. Fit a galley kitchen by using the wall with the window on - this will also feel more spacious as you can face a view/some light rather than having your back to it. Alternatively, it would be a possibility to move the kitchen, although the reason why this hasn't been done before is because this way, both the kitchen and reception rooms have access to natural light. If you move the kitchen, it will be (very) expensive to re-route all the service pipes and it may be left with no natural light. If you were looking for a full-on re-do, I personally would move the door into the reception room closer to the hallway wall (on the left) and extend the hallway down towards the current kitchen wall. This would add some extra wall space so you could extend your kitchen, then I'd add a door on the right of the hallway into the open plan reception room. I'd also section off part of the living room nearest the bedroom, like jonathandb1972 suggested, but I'd turn it into a second bedroom/study space which will add much more value to your property and won't be as expensive as re-routing all your services.

Sounds like a plan ! Add plenty of lighting in work areas - and only open up into conservatory if it properly thermo efficient - otherwise keep external doors to conservatory to keep the heat /cold out !

What you might find is that if you take this info to a kitchen designer that the layout provided will be completely different to what your architect has (surprisingly) come up with. Personally as a designer, I’d have a completely different take on this room area - but then I Design Kitchens and space concepts for a living - (but ask me to design a building with roof angles and all that that entails etc and I’d be out of my depth a little ! ) So it’s just a case of choosing someone who specialises in this particular area really - we are independent so we don’t sell products that would include a profit - so we charge for our services and work with you over a week to thrash it out - but then you can shop around easily by dropping in a copy of the plans and asking for their best price and haggle for discounts that are often far greater than our design fee. Alternatively you can book loads of studios to each send over their sales people to each come over and measure and each then design a scheme and each then try to win the sale by inviting you to go through their ideas in their studio. Although this is ‘free’ it’s maybe a tad more time consuming, repetitive and you don’t usually have much input. Just on the rough guide of the measurements:- I like the idea of the table in the kitchen, but then it makes the space smaller and i'm not sure what you could use the extra space for free'd up by the dining room. The french doors are nice, but they aren't best placed for light in the whole of the downstairs. Like this:- I personally, think that this arrangement is better. The whole entrance to the lounge and storage cupboard thing needs amending, it's a weird mish mash of angles that don't help much. So, I rectified that, created a coat cupboard, a pantry with entry from the kitchen, a small utility so that the entry to the bathroom isn't straight in to the kitchen etc. I moved the double french doors to the middle of the wall to get light straight through from front to back. Kept the kitchen larger, kept the dining area as such etc.
