Looking to get some ideas on dolour schemes for stairs rails and walls

Niamh your hall looks nice although the staircase carpeting could look more contemporary and the crown moulding could be simpler. The knobs on the cupboards could be changed to glass or stainless stell or brass depending on the rest of your accessories. Some interesting wall art and plants as well as some mudroom furniture could look good.

Remove the arched coving with picture light.

If you like sage green, use sage green! The hall looks a little dark in places and all the wisdom from designers is that if it is dark, it is dark and no amount of bright colours will change it; they will look less bright in the dark - which equals dark. Go with it and use your favourite green or an even darker shade. Green is about to be very big; be ahead of the curve! It's also really hard to imagine it not being dark but as soon as you have some furniture in there, and some pictures or other things on the walls, it will look interesting and have a bit of a visual lift. Put up a couple of mirrors, too, to reflect the light which will make it seem lighter - you could have one on the right of the stairs so it reflects a little from the window and one on the wall in the main section near the front door. Have a bit of fun with it. It's where everyone arrives - cosy is very welcoming all year round.

I'd go for option B. I think you need some hint of another colour, but I can understand your dislike of coloured walls and wallpaper (you're not alone in the wallpaper loathing!) Other than a greig colour, have you though of something a bit like F&B Dimity? which will give you the contrast between your white woodwork and the walls, whilst still keeping it pale and neutral, but adding a bit of warmth to counter of the lack of natural light. I think it will also compliment your new travertine

Hi Kerry, That's a challenge. Make sure you dust off, rub down and dust off again before wiping damp cloth over. Allow to dry before you apply undercoat and your chosen paint colour. Hi there, a renovation of the staircase would transform it. Removing the spindles, handrail and updating the cut string to give it a more m modern look. Following the wall panelling with the staircase would add a nice continuity to the look. This staircase started off very similar to yours. Removing and updating the cupboard underneath would also give you vital storage space. Feel free to get in touch.

It looks good for me. It looks traditional. What style do you want? More modern? Contemporary? I like your niche with light. Hang on nice wall art. Change runner on stairs.

You've got a great space to work with there, lovely hallway with nice light, a vista through to the back and a lovely traditional staircase. If you like the style I would say it just needs a new stair runner and a lick of paint. Have a look at Roger Oates wool stair runners - these are all the rage for this kind of setting at the moment, some gorgeous colours available. Then maybe you could coordinate with some artwork you like to go on the walls and choose a neutral wall paint that works with the colours. You could go all white with the stair bannister, but maybe not if it already works with your colour scheme. Then think about how you could "style up" the view to the back of the house. Another thing to consider is lighting accessories to create a nice welcoming ambience at night. Hope this helps :)

Hello! I just posted a question about stairs myself! Just removed a horrible carpet and want to do something fun. Initially we thought about sanding them and then white wash them - as with the floors in the rest of the house. But after quotes came in from sanders, it seem a bit too expensive and time consuming. So we've decided to go with paining them fully, including banister. We're thinking dark/navy blue to make it a bit more fun in an otherwise white Scandinavian looking house.

If you are after less of a statement stairs, you could always paint each back of the stair in a different shade to the other, giving it a fading effect.

I don't think it needs much doing to it personally, it looks attractive and pretty timeless. I would re-paint it, as the white looks very tired, and keep the beigey colouring but perhaps go one shade lighter. Yes, a new runner down the stairs, and job done!

Hi Niamh, the landing looks dark, if possible would lighten with a window or velux, maybe a light-tube. If contemporary remove whole banister and look at glass, otherwise save banisters and change the rails, lighter carpet will enhance the general scene which gives the option to use a more striking colour on the walls, the downstairs panelling should be removed altogether in my opinion - just closes the whole impressive area which should be more welcoming.
