What would you do with the oak panels in my dark hall?
Comments (51)We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it...See MoreHelp with colours, dark hallway.

Light and Space If you really want to get maximum light into your hallway, choose a colour from the Dulux Light + Space range. This has revolutionary light reflecting technology which magically captures light, and bounces it back into the room to help open up darker areas. Cotton Breeze is a gorgeous fresh pale blue grey that would really come to life on the walls and ceiling, and tie in with the blue in your floor. Reflections An easy trick to lift a space is to place mirrors in strategic places. Positioning a large mirror on your landing will make your hallway feel wider, as well as bouncing light that comes in from the doorways. Glass light fittings and glazed framed pictures on the walls will also help with catching the light, and making your hallway feel bright and uplifting. Colour play Lighter colours will open up your hallway, but you don’t always have to go for ‘off white’ to get the best solution. With a hint of nautical, Velvet Touch 5 is a gorgeous soft pale duck egg blue that will co-ordinate with your floor tiles beautifully. Go for a matt finish to disguise uneven surfaces, and Endurance+ which is super hardwearing and wipeable - perfect to clean away any sticky fingerprints. Pick out the architectural details such as skirting and coving in Absolute White for a lovely fresh feel. Focal Point The wall that runs up your stairs is a real focal point of your hallway, so bring this to life with a fuller shade such as Velvet Touch 3, or a printed wallpaper. Highlight this wall with a collection of your favourite pictures or family photos, grouped together for maximum impact. Good luck and please let us know what you go for! Comments (13)Hello Dub M, Well it also depends on what else colour wise you're choosing for your scheme.. Whether you want bold and dramatic or whether you want something lighter in feel... Using them sparingly with a lot of plain in between or perhaps as boarders can then lend themselves to accent rather than statement... All depends on what you want from them as they're versatile! For pale schemes.. Think of colours such as creams, wheat and pale sun hued creams with hints of yellow.. Light and earthy tones on the cream, wheat, canvas, hessian colours perhaps beige and pale mustards, or pale golden creams and burnt siena with hints of brown, ochres .. For bold consider dark almost purple blues and hints of mauve.. Also Charcoal and greys with black and brown hues... For a warm but dramatic look.. The colours are chalky and have depth... Include wood work and again wall covering is versatile in that it could be half height or whole height.. Put tiles and colours together to see what you like.. Paint onto squares of paper no less than A4 and place them where you might want to use them.. Look throughout the day to see how they react and interact with their space and the changing light.. From one colour you can begin to mix it to blend and become another.. In this way you can see colours interact with each other. Use versions of them by working with lighter and or darker varieties of the chosen colour.. Here's a doodle to show the colours blue and others I'm suggesting so you can see the blue is still quite dominant. I rather like blue and elements of yellows, old golds and creams.. Look at the tiles themselves too for inspiration... : ))...See MoreNeed help choosing paint colour for church hall
Comments (3)Hello appydaysdevon, With artificial lighting I would suggest going with some warm tones. Also dense and chalky is my preference. Little Greene is often a suggestion with a range of many lovely colours including a grey palette, but I would stay with blue considering the carpet.... Team with something like Whitening which is a lovely chalky warm white. Should you decide to take a look at that one. I have used Dulux in the classics range.. Here Bone China might have been a nice choice if you want to stick with D for above the panelling.. Given you have a mid to dark blue carpet which will be fitted... It would be a nice idea to continue on this theme. Go a shade darker or keep to the same shade re the carpet. I'm intrigued by what is above the false ceiling... :))...See MoreCelery.
