My husband hates radiator covers...I love them

Hi Houzzers could you give me your thoughts/suggestions on radiator covers for our entry way rad I'd like pic and colour suggestions if possible please, thanks.

Naturally, we would side with your husband and say that what you should do is opt for a designer radiator, but hopefully you'll (maybe) come to that conclusion yourself once you've read the article. Just a quick warning, it is quite a long piece, but highly informative.

Love the floor in your hallway btw, is it a type of epoxy flooring?

I really think that it's a great idea to use a radiator cover in your entry way.

A radiator cover can turn out as an amazing design piece, a focal point in the room.

Here some ideas that I have for you - the first one being more modern, contemporary and the other ones more classic without losing the style.

What I would like to point is that each one of them is matched with other objects, so that way you can't even tell that there's a radiator underneath it. Keep an eye on not blocking the circulation.

Finally, I think that since your husband hates radiator covers, you should leave it in the same colour as the wall - that way it will be "camouflaged".

We love using coloured radiators in our bathroom design. It is so easy to do now as the quality manufacturers such as Bisque, Zehnder and SBH stock the popular colours such as anthracites, steel and beiges. Even the bespoke colours only take a few weeks to be delivered. It is such a simple way to help give a bathroom the WOW factor.

Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. i live in scotland too like JML garden room & tiredoldwoman. love mine. it's purple & velvety fuzzy like embzop's. you can stick in the washing machine & it takes no time to dry outdoors or in. i also have a light cotton kimono style house coat for in the summer. as i sleep in the buff it's nice to just shove that on when i get up & am wandering down to get breakfast. ps. i put it on after my shower but i dry myself with a towel beforehand.

I definitely wouldn't replace with modern radiators, the tall ones.......wouldn't suit the room. I'd go for painting initially, i've painted all of ours in the same colour as the wall, admittedly just with paint mixed up the same as the emulsion. Valspar at B&Q do a great paint for indoor wood and metal, you can have it mixed whatever colour you like. I cleaned ours and painted straight over the top of what was there. Works a treat. I've always painted ours cold, not sure about painting when warm, never tried it.

A meeting half way often saves a marriage. So, I propose leaving the covers off, but installing shelves above some, so that the items above detract from the radiators below. Also there are a number of skirting radiators (long and skinny) that can fit along the floor, so making this a no mess solution. There are also a number of amazing modernist styles that look like wall sculptures rather than radiators, so would look amazing displayed in the centre of the wall, rather than below and out of sight. These are options that instead of spending on a radiator cover, you may want to spend the same on replacing an ugly radiator with a more aesthetically pleasing one. There is something to be said about something that is ugly and gets covered. Why not chuck it out instead?

wow houzzers advice on here is so good I absolutely love the photos posted and the idea of having a rad cover that is a bit of functional Art. The link from Best Heating was very informative. Thanks again Houzzers :-)
