What colour should we paint our small, modern open plan kitchen living
Comments (51)Wow yes lots to waken up to and I'm so grateful for the help! Thanks so much! I tried mforr to find one o those room colouring things for a shop here in the uk and whilt you can do it with dulux paint brand, it didnt seem to like my iPad so need to get onto it on my laptop! Having slept on it I'm thinking I like the idea of doing the kitchen only in colour, and then having highlights of the colour in the LR with cushions perhaps. We considered curtains too but I'm not sure if it would crowd the LR. We are sure that the coffee table is too big also, but I love it (it has a glass top and we can present things in the drawer below). We also have no dining table so this is our only space for setting out food! I'm still liking the green, but the yellow goes well too. We have a tea/coffee jars on our kitchen work top (might be just visible in the pictures) which are green yellow and grey, so if I bring these along to the DIY shop they could colour match those for me. (Along with the list you sent me too mforr!) I will def be back on to show you all the results!! :)...See MoreWhat type of professional should I consult?
Comments (11)Thanks for all the helpful offers and advice so far. Let's have a recap on today's help. I can potentially divide my house into flats and perhaps live in one of them. Or I can rethink the house and make it more presentable for sale. Possibly even making it more attractive to live in myself. Definitely I would turn to One Plan for professional design and as a sounding board. Both from the advice given to this question and the amazing designs I see for the complex problems other people have presented. Another offer Is to buy my house and build me a home at the bottom of my garden. This eases my having to deal with all the builders etc. However though this has been done all around me it aggravates and alienates the neighbours and I myself have opposed such plans through loss of light etc in my other close neighbours garden. This alternative allows me to both stay and go. However it doesn't feel that it solves my problem at present. Actually come to think of it it's quite dark down at the bottom of my garden. In my fantasy the Tuscan dream house is at the bottom of the garden. It's the lovely natural stones and simplicity. It can't manifest in reality. Living permanently abroad I don't think is a reality, but maybe I would like a few months in a rented house in the warm sunshine just to potter without my unsolved home problem gnawing away at my spirit. There is the advice on therapy which I can see would help to find inner direction and get in touch with my spirit. This is a real possibility and I know where to find this help. A life coach too is a real need. An accountants advice on the real financial implications and independent financial advice. Gosh it's going to be a full time job!!! Friends and family are there for me but want me to follow my dream, but it hasn't manifested as I had no time and space to muse and explore until now. I did try staying up in the Yorkshire Dales for a few weeks a couple of years ago wondering if I could live there again. It was where I was born and is very beautiful. It was dark and cold and rained for three weeks and it was summer. My spirit is in need of light and warmth at present. Hawaii sounds a wonderful place to make a home particularly with connections. While not yet solving the bigger issue I am combing through my years of accumulated stuff and have time to sort it and potter around looking at my familiar space with fresh eyes. I will ask a couple of estate agents to come and look at the house. Let's see what they have to say. So thank you one and all for giving me your time and it truly feels a wonderful support at a time when I am feeling a bit at sea. The big issue is trying to make a decision with emotions and spirit that has practical financial considerations and one where location, beauty and design are prime....See MoreSHUTTERS AND CHILDREN: A WINNING COMBINATION
Comments (0)Tips for a stress free school year and the benefits of interior plantation shutters As a mother of four (now grown-up) children, I know the feeling only too well; the end of a long summer, filled with friends, excitement and holidays - energy levels begin to drop! I remember needing to delve deep into the energy reserves just to get them ready for the new term, new shoes, clothes, pens and pencils the list is endless. Finally the day arrives, the children go back and a mix of emotions well up - relief and the empty missing feeling, I was lucky in that I always had my fifth child; The Shutter Shop, to keep me going! As owner of The Shutter Shop, an interior shutter company which I set up when my eldest was only five, almost thirty years ago, I knew that the juggling of work and holidays puts even the most energetic and organised of mothers to the test! Going back to work to focus on selling interior shutters and wooden venetian blinds into the London shutter market, gave me a different set of questions to think about but this time from interior designers and retail customers. I was replacing times tables with CAD drawings, spelling and grammar with panel configurations and geography questions with colour charts. Even though the kids may have gone back to school they are still at the forefront of every parent’s mind so I thought I would share my experience of some of the most common questions I get when discussing shutters, blinds and children. SHUTTERS, A DARKER ROOM AND A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP If your children are anything like mine, the moment the sun is up, they are up! While there were cost benefits over other window solutions, all my children had shutters in their rooms growing up. Shutters block out about 97% of the light coming through the window on their own, but what I wouldn’t have given for our integrated blackout blinds to have been invented twenty something years ago! GAME PROOF SHUTTERS I have been extremely fortunate that my son Ben (now 30) joined The Shutter Shop 18 months ago. He is now fully in control and running and growing our business with energy, but as the keen sportsman in his youth, he really put the robustness of our product to the test. Over the years any ball you can name has hit our shutters at some point during their life span. While I would love to say that our louvres can stand up to a rugby ball being hurtled at them, alas that is not the case and we have had to replace louvres in our shutters as we have for many customers. Fear not though it is possible and is much easier than you might think! However, they do take a fair bit of rough and rumble and I often have customers coming into replace shutters after fifteen years of use and while the guarantee is three years, the quality of the product means they will last! CHILD SAFETY FIRST The safety of children is of paramount importance to us and great care is taken to ensure that no toxic materials are used in the production of our shutters and that all our products adhere to strict government guidelines but we now have the ability to add key locks to shutters to give added security and as all our blinds come with child safety mechanisms they should give some peace of mind! CONTROLLING THE LIGHT FOR STUDY Today, children of all ages use computers on a daily basis from playing games to home work and revising for exams. Extensive viewing of the computer screen can lead to eye discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision and other symptoms of eyestrain. These symptoms may be caused by poor lighting, glare, an improper work station set-up. Ideally, the computer screen should be positioned in a way so that windows are not in front or behind it, but on its side. Also the adjustment of the interior light can make a big difference. Interior window shutters are our best allies, because they control the natural light in the room easing the strain on the eyes with just a small amount of effort like adjusting the louvres. Just a simple precaution can help to reinforce the appropriate viewing habits and assure that there is less strain on the eyes. I hope these little pointers helps those who, like me, are constantly thinking about their children, but don’t worry unduly and when the children go back to school make sure you enjoy the space and do something that YOU want to do! Your energy levels will need topping up before you know it they will be back again! Working and having children can be very tough, especially during the long holidays, but the rewards and confidence that it gives any person as an individual is enormous. I would like to think that I have always had a great relationship with all my children and they are now all my best friends and we have fun together....See MoreWhat kind of flooring should I have in my kitchen?
Comments (14)That photo does look good, the two don't clash at all. I can't afford real wood flooring. I will either be having new laminate or engineered wood flooring, neither of which are something I would want in a kitchen. I also don't feel comfortable having something I feel would be more difficult to clean than tiles. It's a kitchen diner which opens onto our unusually wet and muddy garden. I have two children who create lots of mess. Just yesterday my eldest spilled some sort of hideous red goo all over the cream carpet upstairs! My other option is some sort of blue geometric patterned tiled floor. I haven't been able to find many affordable options so would probably only be able to do half of the room, depending on the way it is designed. Do any more affordable options exist? I found the optiks tiles at topps tiles which are just under £70 a square metre, so still too expensive for me. They are also quite a light blue and I'd prefer something darker. Are there any other options around?...See Moreash4711
