I have never had a problem with any of the major manufacturers whites going yellow.

Is it a cheap paint? Otherwise it may have been a faulty batch or painted over a contaminated substrate that wasn't sealed sufficiently well.

we've also noticed that under things on the window sill the paint goes yellow and we used dulux paint. It just seems to be where ever daylight can't get to, some suggestions have been to use a water based paint but I've never found them very durable.

White gloss is still a firm favourite with customers. Why not mix your gloss kitchen with other things like wood tops, or other gloss colours to soften it down. I personally prefer cream in a kitchen door as even if they are gloss, they tend not to run with certain trends and have a warm tone. Don't worry about fashion either because if you are staying in the property your kitchen will be there for a lot of years, so its much more important that you have what you want, rather than what everyone else is doing. I've got the same issue with the dulux trade solvent based satinwood which was done after this issue was supposedly rectified. As you say it's wherever light can't get to, under ornaments, behind doors etc. When we come to redecorate (we had all the woodwork done at the same time including built in cupboards etc so a pretty big job!) we will be using a water based eggshell or satinwood. My kitchen units are painted in little Greene intelligent eggshell, the water version, and I find it very hard wearing.

Hi,

We've just had all the wood work/ boiler surrounds, etc done up a couple of months ago using Dulux trade Gloss and it seems to be holding pretty well.

We also used a cheaper gloss (macphersons trade gloss) and that too looks very crisp and has no yellowing.

Will have to see how they hold up in the long term though.

It's not only Dulux paint. Any paint with oil in it and in a light color will yellow. Water-based whites will yellow as well if the prep didn't effectively seal the tannins from coming through. The only way to prevent yellowing is to use a paint without oil and, if using water-borne/based paint in a light color to absolutely ensure that priming is done properly in order to prevent all tannin bleed.

I stopped using gloss paint a very long time ago. I hated the smell, it instantly made my lips sore and I generally found it a pig to use. I use water based quick drying satinwood paint. I've never had any problems with its durability despite having to frequently wipe some areas down thanks to shaking muddy dog! It also stays white. The quick drying is important if you have pets and/or children; keeping the inquisitive away from your newly painted surfaces is stressful!!

We had the same problem in our conservatory. It's the only room with painted sills. I swapped to water based satinwood and it doesn't yellow.

A very pale grey seems to resist the yellowing seen with pure whites.

EU regulations a few years ago brought about a change with oil based paint insisting certain solvents - VOCs (volatile organic compounds) were reduced, or taken out altogether. This will be the main reason some white paint yellows

Zinsser is not paint but they make some decent primers.

Sorry to be more clear: I suggest using Zinsser as an undercoat they have plenty of products to choose from to stop yellowing, and then paint over whatever colour you like.
