How to treat new softwood gates and oak posts

We have recently installed new softwood gates supported by oak posts plus matching softwood side panel. I'd like the wood to fade and grey but want to protect it from rotting. All the treatment options seem to involve staining which I'd prefer to avoid if possible as the stains all seem very 'brown'. Oils seem to involve multiple applications each year - these are big gates so low maintenance is a must. Do I need to treat the softwood gates/panel and the oak posts differently? All help gratefully received.
