Floorboard colour choice help please

We are having our flat decorated at the moment and I'm trying to choose a colour for the floorboards in our kitchen and bathroom, which is off the back of the kitchen.

They are the only rooms that have floorboards, and are currently unpainted. They are both small rooms, probably 10 sq metres in total combined. Will post pics later.

The walls will be F&B Ammonite which is a very light grey and the ceilings and woodwork F&B Wevet, which is a bright white with a slight grey / lilac tint from the same family of neutrals.

I want to go darker on the floors, so considered the darkest shade in that family of neutrals Purbeck Stone -

But it's not all that dark and my wife fears it will just be too much light-mid grey everywhere.

According to suggested schemes on F&B website, they reckon Ammonite goes well with Off Black-

or StiffKey Blue

What do you reckon?

You don't mention the colour of the kitchen units. Having a dark floor in the kitchen can mean that you are constantly wiping it. I do, all the time!

OK thanks. The units are a light, natural wood effect melamine / laminate - not particularly nice to be honest, could do with being replaced. Anyway something like this in colour -

I'd say check out HardieBacker cement based water resistant backer board. You should be able to lay straight over the old flooboards. Key to making this work is screw fixings, not nails as less chance of them popping out, loosening or moving Make sure old floor boards are screwed down first and then the HardieBacker board screwed down properly on top, all as manufacturers instructions. Agree with Matthew Hicks about trimming the bath panel to suit, flexible adhesive and grout, good idea. Another tip - cut the floor tiles so the joints line up with the wall joints, your second photo shows them not lined up, this will look neater...

Rebecca thanks for the help! Kinorigo looks amazing. They have a black and white dining table that is just beautiful. Would be great if they also did that as a coffee table. They only offer a bespoke service? Sound a bit scary! Can you pm me a price estimate if you've had something similar previously? I'm currently torn between the Platner, the pedrera by gubi and the 'my moon' table my morose!! The gubi is probably my favourite just because of its classic simplicity but it might get a bit lost.

Restoring Elm Floorboards Help

Please help, we have been restoring our Elm wood floor boards having cleaned them up and sanded them (first error as now some nails are poking through a bit despite it being a light sand ) We have had to repair and replace a few with other slightly different coloured elm boards that you can see in the picture. We love the look of the floor as it is but want to unify the finish with oil wax or something. We have tried English oak which has a tint to it on this board as you can see but it’s a bit false looking. Are their any professionals or experienced renovators out there that can advise us? I would suggest leaving the green scheme in situ at the moment as it think i see green flecks in your material swatch. Going blue in wall, curtains, and furniture, althought it seems coordinated, might end up being too matchy matchy in real life. The green flecks may actually be better co-ordinated than it initally appears and the furniture may actually bring the room together.

i think the nearly black will feel too heavy and dominate the space. Down Pipe is a dark grey but less heavy. I think with the colour of your cabinets, you may be better steering away from the greys and going with a colour like Skimming Stone and and quite a neutral wood colour varnish on the floors and maybe bring in a dark blue like Stiffley Blue on one of the walls if you have feature wall.

I agree with Honey Bee to keep the floors neutral especially if you may be tempted to change the cupboards further down the line. You would find it hard to get rid of a dark paint should you get bored of it. Blue is a nice touch to add a darker dimension to the wall space.

I can't paint those cupboards can I? Is there any way just to replace the doors and the visible ends / sides of the cabinets with something completely different?

You probably can. If the cupboards are standard then you might find fronts to fit but make sure you get all the measurements right - try the ikea site, it is very user friendly.

You may be able to paint over your current ones if they are wood or have a veneer but also if they are surfaced with a laminate. The link below may help. You could change the handles/knobs too.

You can paint over virtually anything with Zinsser Bin. I have painted over vile dark brown vanish and you can even use it on plastic windows. A good key with sandpaper, good undercoat and them topcoat. There are companies that will spray paint your cupboard doors, so that could be an option. Lots of grey isn't a problem as long as it is complemented by some warm wood. I always think you need a balance of cool/warm colours and materials.

So potentially with the floor, I will either paint it the same as the rest of the woodwork - F&B Wevet - which would give it a bright airy feel. Or I am thinking stain it dark and varnish it? To have something organic to set off the cool contemporary paint scheme? The boards are currently a rather unpleasant tan shade with a satin varnish and lots of crevices and dents which have become ingrained with dirt. Keep forgetting to take pix!

If using paint l would go different shades. Either say lighter grey cabinets and slightly darker grey floor. However since l'm really past all that grey l would just have grey floors ( not too dark) and aqua cupboards. You can then add grey accessories but at least have an uplifting colour surround.

I would paint your units in the purbeck. I like the floor but you can white osmo oil to take a little out of the colour out. Use the inky blue on that wall in the porch which will also disguise the coats. I'd then add a potted herb and maybe a little orange for a couple of accessories to lift the grey.

You don't state if you are planning to keep the existing worktop and tiles. If these are to remain I would consider replacing Welvet with Strong White ( this works really well in a smaller spaces with dark worktops) for the ceilings and woodwork, use the Ammonite on the walls with Oval Room Blue on the cupboards and Worsted on the floor. Or if you prefer a more versatile more neutral approach which allows you to change accent colours without a major rework you could paint the floor using F&B Railings ( or use a similar colour stain to show the wood grain through which would add some interest) and paint the cupboards either Cornforth white or Purbeck stone. I would carry the colour scheme through into the hallway where the coats hang to avoid drawing the eyes to this area.
