Rug ideas please!

Hi all - am stumped for a rug for this room. It's a front reception room that I have taken over as my reading room! I thought some sort of ethnic rug, an old Kilim or similar, as I have decorated the room to my tastes. But my wife prefers patchwork type stuff and claims the room is already too masculine (I love it, unsurprisingly). Anyone else have a dark front door room and light floors, and have any ideas?

Stick to your guns! I think a Kilim style rug would look lovely in that space. Get some more art on he walls as well. And as it's a reading room, more books too :)

Yes low pile and patterned are best for hiding any marks. You can also get machine washable rugs. I bought a jute rug as I had heard they are good at disguising any marks and that is true, but mine is quite thick and holds on to so much dust and crumbs in all the crevices, I have to regularly put it on the washing line and beat it with a stick because hoovering just doesn't cut it.

Presuming you are keeping the colour scheme the same anything from a Black, Slate or Silver Plush at the top end to more affordable Santa Cruz Boardwalk if you want more than one colour and more affordable.

It's a tough one, leather may be a safer option. What do you think of this rug with it, might also go nicely with the first rust stool I posted (the stool also comes with black legs)? West elm have a sale on ATM, think it's 20% off if you spend £500 and 30% off > £1000 so might be worth a look, not sure when the sale ends as it's been on a few days

Hello Kimmyrb. Bravo on your impulse buy... it's a beautiful piece. I don't think you need much. The sofa should be the star. Maybe a rug (some pattern in it to break up the block colours) and some cushions (same...and to tie in the blue pouffe and your wall which has hints of green) but not much else. If you also change curtains, you risk making it look too done/match-y methinks. Re cushions/ rug...look online at House of Hackney for patterned textiles.

Thanks all - cowhide could work. No geometrics, but perhaps some sort of woven rustic material? I know nothing about rugs...I like the Kilim idea, but which prominent rug cultures am I missing here?

Pictures and books definitely going up - the picture was taken once I had installed the wall and ceiling lights, before shelving etc. I have some polished copper pipe shelving to go up somewhere..

Hmmm. cowhide, not so sure now. Colourhappy - where did you get your sofa? Basically what I am after, but I'd like a tan leather one instead of grey leather...

The sofas are G Plan vintage fifty nine sofas. Cost quite a bit but I can honestly say that they are the best purchase I have ever made. Now four years old, not faded, so comfy and still got a structured look. Plus, designed by the lovely Wayne Hemmingway :)

Do you not like the cowhides with the markings as I'd go for a light grey one that is as plain as possible. I think a tan Chesterfield would work well with the chair, I personally would go for one with the more traditional arm shape but I just liked this pic as I'd also add an old master on the wall! I also think a marble and brass drinks trolley would work well perhaps in the other alcove rather than shelving? Do you have room for a freestanding bookcase? Great room though, love the floor and walls!

Rugs are such a personal taste. I have a red tribal Persian rug, very traditional and expensive and we love it. I think one of those faded Persian style rugs in blue or grey would look lovely. the Rug Seller is a good online retailer. John Lewis have a great range but most are wool and pretty pricey. I've seen lots of polypropylene ones online that are relatively cheap. Your wooden floor is gorgeous I must say! I'm not a fan of dead animal skins, give me the creeps! I hope you find something you like soon.

Graham and Green sell a golden cowhide rug with small squares, sounds out there, but it will add some female glamour and do double duty as a hard wearing rug.

I agree you need a kilim or Persian rug. Check out Abigail ahern for inspiration. La redoute do good priced copies. Don't go for anything modern or new looking. A cowhide would go, but it's a bit more predictable. Stick with your gut.

Kilim rugs are nice but they are health hazard, it’s easy to trip on and are slippery on timber floor. Persian are good choice but a bit pricey but good investment and there is Afghanistan style rug similar to Persian but lot cheaper and you could look for imperfect pieces, they are very affordable. There’s also huge selection of machine made rugs from polypropylene , good quality and price.

We moved house a bit unexpectedly and started a whole new renovation, so no rug in the end! I have a thread on it in the before and after section on here...

You must miss that room... It’s gorgeous! Will definitely check out your before and after thread. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your new rooms... We seem to have similar tastes in decor! What finish was the paint you used? Does It come in different finishes? Haven’t gotten as far as checking that out yet... The sample pot seems to only come in a standard finish...

Thanks guys - and cowhide it is for the TV room in our new house, which is dark green with tan leather sofa and mahogany and brass accents.

Nisha I think you are right - I think the correct term for wall paint of eggshell finish is satin or sil, rather than eggshell?
