Rug ideas please!

Hi all - am stumped for a rug for this room. It's a front reception room that I have taken over as my reading room! I thought some sort of ethnic rug, an old Kilim or similar, as I have decorated the room to my tastes. But my wife prefers patchwork type stuff and claims the room is already too masculine (I love it, unsurprisingly). Anyone else have a dark front door room and light floors, and have any ideas?

7 years agoStick to your guns! I think a Kilim style rug would look lovely in that space. Get some more art on he walls as well. And as it's a reading room, more books too :)

Comments (8)Main question with expensive rugs is "do you really love the rug, independently of fashion trends?". I do worry that expensive graphic designs are very much in style now but could well be something which palls very quickly as trends move on and you get sick of the pattern. I'd always go for cheaper rugs for these "fashion-led" designs. Does your selected design go with your sofa? Yes, I think it does. Other issues are: (i) what wall colour are you going to use?; and (ii) is the high-shine wood flooring in picture no. 1 as warm-toned in reality? It's easier to get tonal and colour matches to work if you are dealing with the same undertones. The floor looks like it has warm, yellow-based undertones while your sofa and proposed rug are cool, blue-based shades. Comments (18)Your garden looks lovely:) My first thought was to add something colourful and vibrant like some mosaic wall art but as minnie101 has pointed out this would draw attention to the bins. Would make great little project tho as you could make it yourself with tile samples, painted pebbles, and Brocken crockery grouted onto some marine ply, perhaps have this above the sofa and move the window to that area. Or how about some wall baskets or wire shelves. It's looking like either a neutral (but contrasting against beige carpet) or a colour based rug would work equally well, depending on personal preference. We have double doors from the living room into our dining room which has black & white check curtains - photo shows the view through. I'm wondering whether a black and white/ivory rug would connect the rooms together from a design point of view? Do you not like the cowhides with the markings as I'd go for a light grey one that is as plain as possible. I think a tan Chesterfield would work well with the chair, I personally would go for one with the more traditional arm shape but I just liked this pic as I'd also add an old master on the wall! I also think a marble and brass drinks trolley would work well perhaps in the other alcove rather than shelving? Do you have room for a freestanding bookcase? Great room though, love the floor and walls!

7 years agoKilim rugs are nice but they are health hazard, it’s easy to trip on and are slippery on timber floor. Persian are good choice but a bit pricey but good investment and there is Afghanistan style rug similar to Persian but lot cheaper and you could look for imperfect pieces, they are very affordable. There’s also huge selection of machine made rugs from polypropylene , good quality and price.
