How can I bring this staircase up to date?
Comments (4)Hi Eileen, There are a number of options you can do to your stairs to update the look. As you have what is classed as a "diminishing" staircase, glass with oak would be a good option to open it up and create more light. I have attached a picture so you can see an example of a similar diminishing staircase in oak and glass. Alternatively go for a plain square or stop chamfered spindle in either oak or white primed. You may feel there is too much Oak if you are having oak flooring, so having everything in white with a contrasting handrail in oak could be an option to tie it in with the flooring. To make room for it install a single gate on the house side and a side fence panel up to the boundary fence or a cheaper option would be to keep the existing double gate but make it so only one side opens. Then construct a long shallow shed along the fence for all of that stuff including the dustbins. A shallow compartmentalised shed with a number of doors means everything is easily to hand. Make a feature of the shed. If upper windows look down on it give it a green roof or grow a climber over it. Or face it in narrow contemporary slats. Perhaps soften the remainder of the boundary fence by removing the concrete below the fence and planting climbers. To ensure the plants thrive first know the aspect and soil condition. Ivy will grow just about anywhere and comes in different leaf shapes, sizes and shades of green. Some are more vigorous than others so check before you buy....See MoreHow can I dress up this area?

Comments (10)Hi, This is a really fantastic floorplan for ideas as its almost a blank canvas. Here is a quick design that I came up with. I thought you might want a proper entrance hall so that you don’t enter the whole space immediately. As you come through the kitchen is now on the left with living room open to it but partly screened with a central fireplace (the chimney might have to be cleverly routed through the ceiling or the fire could be electric). Then at the back of the house you have a large dining area and and enclosed lounge. I think some folding doors or more glazing at the back with a raised patio or decking would also make this dining room more of a feature! Please let me know what you think? I have a few more alternative ideas as well. And I wish you all the best with your project!! Phill...See MoreA B
