Advice for hall and landing

About to update the hall and landing in a busy family home, I'm thinking pale grey walls, white paintwork but not sure what to do with the floor, vinyl tiles seem most practicable but would be quite plain. Any suggestions as to colour and design would be really appreciated.

Grey and white work great together in a hallway and that's what I recently did to ours, I also added a DIY panel design and dado rail which I think looks rather good and effective at breaking up the grey. see before and after pictures below

Great, thank you this is what I was thinking, maybe a shade lighter and replace the carpet with oak laminate or vinyl tiles

Many people simply replace the existing doors with oak ones and keep white skirting and architrave. Just remember the white will need painting in due course whereas if you have Oak there too it time it will cut down the maintenance.

If you will be keeping the Oak doors then i wouldn’t paint the architrave and skirting in white. I would leave them in the Oak finish. It’s easier maintenance and then you will end up going through the rest of the house doing the same creating yourself more work. Take a look a Cromarty. It’s a Farrow & Ball colour but you can match it from other cheaper suppliers such as Johnstones. It’s a lovely light green that’s not overpowering and looks lovely contrasting against Oak woodwork. Regarding a shoe box I’d be a bit cautious of taking up space near to the bottom of the stairs. I always worry about anyone slipping down stairs and falling into it.

How about darker skirting, door surrounds and stairs with slightly lighter grey walls? Try to get the same' family ' of greys so the tones work. I'm loving a darker skirting as it shows less dirt.

How about painting all the walls white and have a darker carpet for the stairs - I also like the herringbone flooring as it gives it more texture.

Hi,

We agree with Claire - herringbone flooring is a popular feature for a hallway with carpet running up the stairs. And your hallway does lend itself to this classic period look. If you're thinking of going for pale grey walls, then we'd suggest a warm floor to create contrast. And even though a hallway floor can get dirty all too easily, the character in a wood parquet is good at helping to hide it. Here's an idea:

Hi S,

Busy family home requires durable and washable finish to walls. Colourwise...white will brighten up and tidy the area. Using colours may not be the best idea as it's full of features. However, if white isn't option go for bright and pale shades.

Vinyl tiles don't have to be plain and boring, see here.

We have Floor Monster's engineered chevron wood in the living room - see below. It is beautiful and very high quality, and they were a great company to deal with (thanks by the way Floor Monster - great advice on the floor - we love it!) but I personally would not have engineered wood in a high traffic area.

We went for a classic chequerboard. After all my comments about practicality, we used grey limestone and white marble - which obviously needs upkeep! But the look is easily achieved with more practical ceramic tiles.please forgive the scruffy paint and front door - renovation still in progress...

If you want to keep the hall and stairs light, paint the walls in a soft stone colour like Little Greene's Slaked Lime- Deep 150. The floors would look good in a medium Mahogany colour in a herringbone effect. This could be hard vinyl like Karndean or an engineered board.

Slaked comes up well - we have Slaked lime Deep for dado and below including skirtings and door surrounds and then above the dado rail Slaked Lime Mid. Looks lovely and chalky against a mid-toned wood floor. It's not a dead grey, quite fresh.

Hi s,

if you are looking for lighter tones, we do have a couple of option that may be of interest;

Lucerne Chevron

We also have this available in Herringbone style and tradition 125mm planks as well.

If you are more looking to go down the grey route we do have another couple of options.

We have an engineered Brienz board which has more grey tone throughout.

Also our Tundra board may be of interest. This comes in either a 150mm wide plank or a 190mm wide

Another very good option may be our Lugano board this is a very unique board and looks amazing down.

The finished hall is so lovely! Would you consider painting the hall table to help it blend better? And perhaps the frame of the picture could be painted to match it.

Thank you, yes I’m thinking of removing the table, the hall feels bigger without it and it just encourages clutter, we’re going to replace the pictures too when we find the right type.
