Corten steel advice

Hi all. I'm having a large modern extension to a listed Victorian building built. It will mostly be glass but will have a solid wall.

i was thinking of cladding this wall with Corten steel to give a warm, earthy look to contrast the otherwise modern extension.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience of this ? Would I be able to get tall (3m+) panels and what thickness should I look at for cladding (they seem to start at 1.5mm but I'm not sure what's appropriate) ?

Start with a Google search

"corten steel cladding"

The problems seldom lie with the material, but with their connection to other elements and remain neat, weather-tight, durable & secure. The devil, as always, is in the detail.

Actually fabricating panels is relatively straightforward once the construction and fabrication details and dimensions have been sorted out.

And, of course, be careful with the insulation!

I'm renovating a 1960s house, and want to introduce a mid-century modern vibe where possible. Really hate the plastic guttering & downpipes, and thinking of replacing with aluminium or stainless steel. Does anyone have advice about this? Also, like the idea of rain chains to divert rainwater from the roof to the garden. I live in Sheffield. Can anyone recommend a trusted company who are experienced in this kind of work? Hi everyone, I'm not sure if anyone would be able to make any suggestions regarding this, but I thought I'd ask. I'm in the process of contacting a few structural engineers, but I can't get in touch with the original person who did my plans for me (which was about 2 years ago, unfortunately I had to put my plans on hold), so I may have to start from scratch, hence my post on here. I've attached 3 images. Top - shows the original plan with my pencil marks over showing the changes I want to make. The red line shows the current wall that I want to retain. The wall just to the left was a stud wall that was proposed to be put in its place, as originally I was going to take out the load bearing wall in red. The green dots represent steels that were going to be built in to the stud wall to support the beams going across the room the other way. Middle - shows this just zoomed in Bottom - shows the layout I want to acheive. However, I don't think I can pull the wall back that far as it doesn't tie in with the beam going the other way. As you can tell, I was just thinking about the layout and not the structural requirements! Has anyone completed a renovation similar to this? What are my options? Any advice gratefully received. As mentioned, I'm trying to get in touch with the original engineer but thought I'd try my luck on here just in case anyone has that kind of background. Thanks.

We had to have an RSJ. They are expensive but once you make such a wide opening in an outside supporting wall, you need to properly and safely reinforce it. You need to consult a professional expert.

Hi,
The first thing you need to think about is the drainage. Corten will go through a bleed cycle in the first years where is oxidises to protect its self. In doing this and until it’s fully rusted the water run off will stain the ground or finishes direct under it.
Your best using 3mm due to the mill scale it will have, gives a much richer texture. You can get down to 1.5mm but this is only in a mill finish which is smooth metal. You can also get ADZ which won’t bleed so much but is harder to find in the uk and twice the price.

As frazer78 suggests 3mm is really the minimum you can use, Corten has the property of rusting to a point where the layer of oxide provides a barrier to further oxidation. If the start point is too thin all you will have is oxide and little or no metal.

The largest sheets are 3m X 1.5m but for ease of installation I would suggest smaller sections, finding a fabricator to install should be easy but if you have any welding done, make sure the contractor uses a welding rod or wire that oxidises at the same rate or it will look odd usually from mild steel mig wire rusting too fast.

My experience with Corten is from rebuilding a Dutch Corten steel yacht hull 15 years ago for my brother so not quite the same as cladding a house.
