Kitchen diner design help

Hi guys,

I posted recently about splitting my current kitchen diner to create a bedroom. I'm thinking it's the way to go (as a spare room/playroom until little ones are big enough to come downstairs). But now I'm confused about layout for the kitchen as we have a few original features - recessed shelves (known as an Edinburgh press) and a fireplace hearth. I'd really like to keep the shelves but I'm on the fence about the fireplace as it isn't doing anything at the moment.

Another Houzzer suggested I could turn the recessed area into a downstairs toilet, which I like but I worry about losing that space from a smaller kitchen diner.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
