A trend that should end
Comments (1300)For me it’s maximalism. Lovely in a quirky cafe or boutique hotel but at home it would give me a headache. I like a restful house and so yes quite a lot of it is grey! Not battleship grey or anthracite but bluey or greeny greys. Concrete floors. Depressing, cold, ecologically not great, look unfinished. Plants very high up. How do you water them? Walk in wardrobes even if it means the bedroom becomes tiny. I’d rather have a bigger bedroom with wardrobes in it, than dress and sleep in tiny spaces. Uber industrial. There’s a reason we usually hide cables, conduits, vent ducts...because they are ugly. Buying new furniture and accessories very often to have an “up to date“ look. I see all these instagram pictures with everything brass, mid century, wood, rattan, green (today’s trends) and I wonder what has happened to all their grey, painted, silver, shabby chic items from 5/10 years ago. And what will they do with today’s items when the look swings round again......See MoreDiscrete accessible bathroom for disabled parent
Comments (5)Space is the key, i.e. space for a wheelchair or walking aid and/or space for a carer to assist! As Nick says above, there are lots of nice fittings that are not necessarily marketed as accessible, but do the job and still look good (nice lever taps, nice sinks that can be wall hung so have wheelchair space underneath). If grab rails are needed, you can get some nice metal and even timber ones, or there are some on the market that have dual purpose as towel rail or loo roll holder, so your walls aren't littered with lots of rails etc. I also think it's nice to design the furniture/ fittings that can double as surfaces to steady yourself, like a stylish bench which can help with dressing and undressing. I would go for a wet floor shower for accessibility, either with a stylish fixed bench or your parent may need a specialist shower chair (which would be removable so not a 'fixture' of the bathroom). There are lots of specialist baths out there, which are pretty expensive and can be a bit institutional looking but some nicer than others so definitely worth doing a bit of research. A shallow standard bath designed with a flat section of boxing at the end of the bath which you can sit on to then swing your legs into the bath would be a minimum. Or there are also specialist sling/seats accessories which can help lower a person into the bath but can be removed so aren't a permanent fixture in the room....See MoreDownsizing - how was it for you?
Comments (31)It was the best thing to do for this stage in our lives. Each home we had fitted our circumstances at the time; no children to a growing busy family back to occasional family. We left our 5 bedroom Victorian town house with the typical large rooms which we had lived in for 20 years and the location we had been in for over 30 years We had created a small but beautiful walled garden and I had to travel by car to my allotment. Having decided to move we spent time sorting the house to make the best of marketing it. We went through all the boxes of photographs, (my three boys having a good giggle), threw the unnecessary or duplicate ones away, then sent them off to be put on CD. We kept the shoe box full of photos as well just in case..... I put all my boys school stuff into separate boxes and they had to decide what to do with it. One did not even look at it, one looked and then dumped and one selected a few bits he wanted. As a joint exercise it was a wonderful family time and trip down memory lane. We had several sweeps through our belongings. Each time it was obvious what was not needed. Items given away, sold donated or dumped. It also became easier each time to let go of the things we previously thought we wanted. Finally storage for some bits then we moved into a rented flat whilst we looked for our next property. By the time we found it, and with the process of moving most of what was in storage was not needed emotionally or physically either. We are now 300 miles away in a two bedroom cottage in the middle of a forest. We are renovating it and adapting it (not enlarging) as we go, in fact turning it into a one bedroom property but with flexible other rooms. We do have the advantage of a mezzanine bedroom holiday conversion attached which we are using whilst the work is happening. This small space living is focusing us even further. Financially we are much better off, I am creating the home of my dreams, we have entered a new welcoming community and a totally new way of life. Our boys love visiting. We have been here for 18 months and so glad we have done it. Cathartic, most definitely, happier certainly, the right thing for this stage of our lives yes....See MoreKitchen Island - hob or sink?
Comments (58)@Damian Farrell, the induction hob I've had since... what.. July or August? I think? Not that long. Took a while to get used to it, having always cooked on gas. Advantages: very quick, easy to clean, you can let it automatically turn off after a certain time. Disadvantages: sometimes the pans make annoying noises, has something to do with the resonance of the magnetic field I think? I don't know. But it can be a bit annoying. Make:Schott-Ceran, but the downdraft is from a Dutch company called Airo Design. Don't think they export to other countries. Anyway, almost every company does them now. Bora gets good reviews, Miele, Siemens... The videos on youtube show that the steam goes down and you think, yeah... right... But it really does go down. It works just as good, if not better than a regular one that is over the hob. I'm happy with it....See MoreChristian Builders Margate Ltd
