Regarding the Bamboo

Considering the use of running bamboo for a client that has a fairly narrow planting bed along a cedar fence (similar situation it appears). How long had this particular stand of bamboo been in place at the time of this photo? Since then, what sort of maintenance has had to be done to keep the bamboo curtailed? Also, what is the direction of the sun pattern in this landscape? Thank you
