What are your opinions on the "built in bedhead"
What are your opinions on the "built in bedhead". I have a hand made superking. The issues are the room looks too plain and the narrow allowances at the sides are accentuated by the undersized nightstands/drawers.
I am thinking about making the window into patio doors, and a door to en-suite opposite.
What do you think? ... because I will have to get a good carpenter in to make it right, and match the bed correctly. The design I have made has extra deep surfaces with the existing mini drawer units built in. I though the first shelf above could be in glass so that an LED strip could light both above and below at the same time (thats why it looks white and thin in the drawing). To balance the amount of wood out, Ive added a footboard/shelf, as it could also be useful, I use the pouffe at the end of the bed a lot due to no room to get dressed at the bedside.

Comments (12)I think priorities depend on the property & your situation, e.g, children or not. With our last property (previously owned by 4 single men in their twenties) the bathroom was an absolute priority. There was no way I was going to use that bathroom with shagpile carpet! The kitchen was also a top priority - the cabinet doors had been painted with textured matt paint & I wouldn’t like to guess what was splattered all over them! The oven also went out the door on our first day! In our current house, (we now have children) we’ve completely renovated with rooms being relocated but bathroom (carpet tiles) & kitchen had mini makeovers to keep us going. Comments (4)We Brits love giving an opinion so you probably posted in the right place. I think you have to make a decision based on the plot….. I like the Mar El Venti…… but since the principal rooms have side facing windows you would have to have a plot where there was a sideways view. I also liked this plan because the view from the front door was unobstructed by solid wall but the living space was still private. I like an element of the Greenwich plan- I think it’s good to have the theatre next to the family room….. since there are currently only two of you these two spaces could easily be combined so that you have a bigger living space- then perhaps one of the under used bedrooms could be an extra living space for you. Personally I think it would be better to choose a plan you can spread out into rather than half the house being bedrooms you never use. I think it’s odd that quite a few of the plans have the theatre room right at the back of the house- surely this room is focused on watching TV so it needs no view and should be at the side of the house….. surely your most private outside space is the back garden and so why don’t any of the plans have a master bedroom at the back? And it this builder will customise plans why not pick a favourite and see how people would suggest you change it?...See MoreRose Williams
6 years agoMaking the bed higher is not a possibility really. The drawers are tiny but that never really bothered us, just the non existent surface space. I looked at putting the bed on the other wall but that would lose my seating area, you could see all the stuff under the bed, and it would be a long walk around to that side of the bed being oversized superking. The advantage would be that a TV could go in a good place or the projector on my tablet would work well on the wall opposite though.
I looked at making a huge headboard with low hanging ceiling lights to free up the night stands. It only really worked with a "busy" material on the headboard which would be difficult to choose.

Ive had another play. I'm really keen on having a shelf down my side, it doesnt have to be much (just 10cm), but it can only be done on one side. I think it adds a good focal point rather than it being all bed in there.
The back wall/shelves are at 15cm deph here. I put in alcoves with glass shelves, as no matter what I do, there is no room for a shelf on the left, but alcoves behind the night stands will give just enough extra.

6 years agoRose! Your idea is great! But glass shelf- ohhhhhhhh boy! It would collecting dust. You are lucky you got carpenter! I'd go even further. I would build in some side shelving-cabinets.

or even go further and get more storage. All you need just get a doors and carpenter will do his job. IKEA has doors.
