Hi Danny, I understand your issue with dog mud on cream carpets. I've had dogs all my life. We've also always had cream carpets which, in my eyes, is a ridiculous idea for my family because if it's not the muddy dog ruining the carpet, it's a family member spilling tea and coffee! It seems like you want less hassle/less cleaning. Honestly? Get an easily cleanable floor. If you think the muddy dog is the issue, just wait until your child is moving and throwing food/being sick/god knows what! Tony's images are great - it seems like covering the pond might be a great opportunity to make this a "dog" area. I can see a small path on the left hand side of your garden, maybe you could widen this and have it leading towards an area with bark/grass. I definitely wouldn't recommend letting your dog do its business on the decking. Not only will it damage the wood, but it's an area where everyone will walk, so stepping in poo is inevitable! As a quick fix for the mud on carpets - pop some old towels on the floor near the entrance to the garden. Every time your dog comes in with muddy paws, use the towel to wipe off the excess mud. As for the poo, where ever your dog poos it will need to be picked up, so no fix for this! From experience, my dogs have always found an area in the garden they like to poo in. We just keep checking it every now and then. I have to admit, it seems a little sad to think the dog wouldn't mix with the family in the garden, as my childhood was so enjoyed having our dog in the garden with us. But this is YOUR house, and whatever works best for you is the answer. Good luck/let us know what you decided.

Hi guys, sorry for the tardy response, Ive had quite a lot to contend with to say the least (boilers, heat pumps, sparkies, plumbers, builders etc.) Ive decided to take the chimney breast down completely and have a freestanding woodburner between the 2 windows. Heres a bit of video to give you an idea (I can upload a better video if you like). https://www.dropbox.com/s/9wwtaa4o8m5d0nx/MAH01333.mp4?dl=0 The reason I want to take out the chimney breast is becuase it does actually create a dark patch - maybe you can see in the video. I like the idea of increasing the depth of the window tom come down to window seat height. I want to sit down in that room and be able to look out (at the moment you can only see out if you stand in front of the window, and even then - becuase of its height - you can really only see sky). Once thought would be to just have each window as being a large plane of glass with no bars - but maybe that would look a bit too modern? I dont want to obscure any of the view/light with horizontal/vertical bars - but having said that - I want to keep that 'cottagey' feel. What do you think?

Like Daisy England, we have our lawn done by a lawn chap, he comes every three months or so and the difference from what it was, is startling. Our lawn was in pretty bad shape in the beginning, with bare patches, a load of moss and lots of weeds. First time he came, he scarified it, weed killed it and re-seeded, within a very short space of time it was looking great. All he does now is apply a feed (and a weedkiller when required) every three months - he charges £20 per visit for that. It may be worth finding a similar chap local to you, as when ours first came, he told us we needed a particular seed mix for our lawn, which explained why any seeding we'd done previously hadn't worked well.
