Quarry tile floor - modern or traditional kitchen?
Comments (5)Have to agree with Minnie! We have quarry tiles in our kitchen in dining room. They are quiet orangey and warm in colour, so go great with a cream and most traditional country colours. If you wanted a sleek shiny modern kitchen, it would be a shame to remove them, but I am not too sure if they would work. Maybe if you had a more industrial twist to it all. They are VERY practical. Comments (17)Hi, Is there anything that makes you think it would be difficult to remove and replace the existing tiles? It looks like you have a wall hung wc pan (hard to tell in the photos), so no problem with that, and the tiled bath panel helps as well. If there was electric underfloor heating then it would make sense to avoid lifting the existing but otherwise its the best way to do it. If fitting a new floor you would want to have new sealant to the perimeter of the room, floors to wall, anyway so that would cover any join between the new floor and existing walls. Personally I would remove and replace with whatever you like, tiles amtico etc. etc. Then you have a brand new floor that you know will last. Sheet vinyl over the top of the existing will show the indentations of the existing grout lines and anything else will add unnecessary height to the threshold and may be uneven. Good luck with the work and make sure to post up photos when its all done....See MoreQuarry tiles - what do you think?
Comments (10)We inherited a couple of rooms with quarry tiles when we bought this house... older (though not original) tiles in the utility room in red shades and newer ones in the kitchen in brown shades. I like the red tiles in the smaller space, but the tiles in the kitchen really suck the light out of the room. It may just be the shade of tile and a brighter colour might be ok, but I'd much prefer something lighter and will change them when we redo the kitchen in a year or so. Think about the natural light the room gets because if you do go for the quarry tile it will darken the room a lot....See MoreHideous (?) quarry tiles on window sill
Comments (3)Tani H-S, a good point about an "out room". Perhaps the ledge under the small window in the hallway can remain as a nod to the history of the house. But I'm certainly not a fan of this look on a bigger scale. Sonia, not negative at all! I disliked them myself from the outset. The niggle of doubt only started after we've found the same "feature" under the 1970-80s tiles in the kitchen and bathroom which indicates they had been there before that particular make over....See MoreAngela Gilham
