Love your pergola design! Is it made from red cedar? I can't seem to find posts chunky enough in that wood to do the same thing.

The pergola was actually constructed using a treated softwood that has been stained lightly to tone the colour. We have used a red cedar in this dimension (150x150mm) once before but as you point out the difficulty comes in sourcing it.

We could definitely help you with this. With a 6'1" husband you'd need clearance of about two metres to be comfortable. Given the height of the existing deck above ground level, that's going to be tight, so the design is going to need to be quite clever! The trick will be to keep it modern and simple. Of course, if there's no rush to the project, applying for planning permission might allow you to go to a more comfortable 2.8 metres total height (say) - you lose nothing other than time (and a fee of about £175) because even if refused, you could still build a 'permitted development' version that maxes out at 2.5m.

Hi Nicole, I think that in order to get the pricing back, they all need to be pricing for the same deck and materials There are a myriad of decking solutions out there and they could all be pricing for different deck substrates and finish deck. The quality of product can vary from £15 pounds a metre to £150. so my tip would be to make sure which ever builder you go with provides you details of the materials they intend using, that way you can avoid disappointment with the overall quality once work commences. it looks like the dog will be overseeing the workmanship!! good luck!!

You can get table tennis tables which convert to dining tables, I suppose the key thing is exactly how big the concrete area is as to whether there’s enough room around it? I’m not sure how the basketball could work. The nets obviously have a backing board and are very high whereas there are various regulations around pergola heights depending on distance from boundary and whether you’re in a conservation area or listed building etc. Assuming your children use the basketball net (?!) you could use much lower nets but then where does the dining table go?
