Changing outside of 1970s house

Would really welcome some ideas on how to update the outside of this 1970s house.

Not sure about keeping the cladding and rendering the brickwork and keeping/removing the porch or even changing the roofing

Any thoughts welcome

Can the cladding be painted? That might give it a lift although obviously you'd need to consider the upkeep of that. I actually quite like the look of the house as it is but rendering the brickwork & replacing the roof with slates would modernise it.

Personally I think the issue is the proportions. I think the porch roof is too dominant, it makes the upstairs windows too small and therefore the cladding look top heavy. I also think that the front door looks small.
I think you should swap the porch for a flat roofed alternative with an overhang, change the windows on the front for deeper ones and cut a wide path to the front door to help make the entrance feel grander. I might also paint the brickwork under the porch to help make the front door more prominent.

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? If you are looking for a green based grey I would recommend farrow and ball Old White. We are just having our house repainted this colour. I wanted grey but we are surrounded by greenery and the blue based greys looked light blue rather than grey. The green base to Old White works well with greenery. Its also a very classic colour and so is easy to live with (or at least I hope so!). I have been amazed at how different the different greys look when put next to one another. All look grey in isolation. Together you can very clearly see that some are green based, some blue based and some purple based.

Oh, wow, beautiful job! May I ask what the budget was? I see the post is 4 years old, but I wonder what the price of a renovation like this would be now. I have a decent, small house located on a beach. Currently, I'm a tenant with the help of playarealestategroup.com, but I'm planning on buying my own home. I think the big decision for the OP is whether he wants his house to be sympathetic to the period houses around him or to go totally contemporary, as in some of the really inspiring images above. Aside from personal aesthetic inclinations, this decision is related to caring about what the neighbors think, as some may dislike a contemporary interruption in the otherwise stylistically cohesive neighborhood (and of course some will love it if it is done well!), whereas the kinds of changes in the first three images posted above by Jonathan are not likely to offend anyone. There may be also be considerations related to resale. In a neighborhood where all the houses are like the OP's place, I wouldn't hesitate to go contemporary, and my guess is that many others would also be going that way, but his house is a relatively recent infill in an old established strip.

Good ideas. I would look into the costs of replacing cladding with new white modern cladding which is maintenance free rather than painting. Unless its horrendously expensive.

I hadn't really considered the dimensions of the porch, I was actually the bling of extending it across to match both sides, at the front. But I think you're right, it's a bit overwhelming and makes dimensions look wrong.

I was also thinking of cream rendering and grey roofing, with or without cladding. I'm just not sure. What do you guys think?
