Nursery inspiration on a budget!!
Hi all! I need your expert eye and advice to help me try and solve a massive eye sore in the house. We inherited an ugly green carpet and sunflower yellow wardrobes in a room which has slowly become my sons new nursery.
I need some inspiration to help turn this eyesore into a lovely room for my little boy. I can not afford to replace the carpet or the wardrobes at the moment so need to work with them both please :(
Your input would be greatly appreciated indeed by a little man and his mummy.

6 years agoHi. I must admit I like the yellow wardrobes for a nursery! I'd go for a painted mountain feature wall. You can get a tester pot to do the sun and buy a dark grey for the mountains and add white paint it If you have any knocking around for the lighter Ones. The remaining walls I'd do a light grey with the chest in white. I'd add 2 floating shelves, try ikea, on another wall. The art is from etsy for £10 unframed and you can get frames in Homebase's etc cheaply. The personalised star is from love-up £15. The plane light is from lights.co.uk for £47. The hot air ballon (to be hung in front of mountains) is pavilion broadway £31 which comes in different colours, they also do a mobile for c£50. I assume you have room for a teepee? I think they look really cute in kids rooms! If you stick to things like this you may also be able to put down a DIY laminate floor? What is the square footage? Do you have curtains or blinds? If you have another style in mind though I will happily shop around!

6 years agoSince you are unable to change the carpet, I would suggest painting the walls and cupboard doors white so that they blend into the wall and are not the focal point. Then using colourful wall stickers to create a colourful focal point with a nursery theme to lure the eye away from the parts you dislike but cannot change. Wall stickers are an inexpensive way to bring life to a room and can be easily changed as the child grows up. Paint the chest of drawers white and place a nursery lamp on it and then purchase new bedding and curtaining and ceiling light to go with your chosen theme.

Right so how about going with a "Where the wild things are" theme or something of that nature..... Given you have a dark green carpet which I like... What about using this as a basis ie green grass... Then you can build up the room as you go and make it a "theme" and a possible activity for your boy..... "Imagination" for the young generation can run wild... (or even adults for that matter) ( I still love mine) You could then look at the room with a view to building up the look rather than think you have to tackle it all in one week for example. Or it could simply be an outdoors theme as a more general idea..
Also involving your boy with an activity to create his room might be rather fun.. Take a look at these images for some inspiration.. Also perhaps don't consider replacing the wardrobe as those doors can transform into a whole new environment which can evolve as he grows up...... Also perhaps consider the books he likes... Wolves by Emily Gravett is quite beautiful as are her others.. It is quite possible you have many things that you can look to for inspiration... :))

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLove all the ideas so far. I actually think the green carpet works really well for a nursery and will be very stain friendly!!! How about wipe clean white walls and a few splashes of gold. There is a gorgeous anthropologie gold circus wallpaper you could put on the wardrobe doors, and a vintage rocking horse would finish it off nicely

6 years agoOh I think the colours are quite fun! If you really don't like the yellow, you can always easily repaint the cabinets another colour. If you hate the green carpet, cover it with a big rug! Failing hiding the carpet and painting the cabinets, I might try adding some forest green and yellow accents throughout the nursery to make the colours you have seem like deliberate choices (eg in the bedding and various accessories). I think these colours could look really cute and playful in a nursery :)
