Final Kitchen layout, any suggestions on how to improve it?
Comments (17)Okay, so here are my concerns with the current layout: with no space to the other side of the sink, where will the dirty/clean dishes go. In our house, we put dirty dishes on one side and when unloading the dishwasher, put stuff that still needs to be dried off on the other side. But you may well have another system of loading/unloading. Also, items that can't go into the dishwasher need to be somewhere when dirty and then put somewhere when clean. So, in my experience a sink needs counterspace on two sides. You do need somewhere to put appliances, like the toaster/kettle, coffee machine or maybe a stand mixer? If they are behind doors that aren't pocket doors, you'll be working in a 'confined space', which doesn't seem very practical. I've been through the whole thought process recently and we've decided to do without doors in front of the breakfast counter. Very happy with that decision. I'll post pics so you can see how it looks. We also have kitchen doors that lead to the pantry behind the tall bank of cupboards. We've put the ovens above each other, because one oven we already had and the other one is new and a slightly different design. This left space for two pull out larders, one either side of the ovens. Then we have a tall freezer, tall fridge, double doors to the pantry. We also have a separate coffee corner. Hope this helps....See MoreHow could I improve the front of this house?
Comments (9)I like Kerry Bryan’s first photo. I’m thinking maybe a hip to gable dormer window conversion above the garage with two dormer windows. Replace red tiles with black. Then stone cladding and white render with grey windows, not sure which stone yet or where. Not sure yet how to tackle the right side of the house and feel the window positions don’t look right...See MoreHow can I make my Edwardian house front look nicer?
Comments (16)Personally I think that the issue is that the pebbledashed section is too plain and this is exacerbated by the fact that the roof here is higher than the original plan. In my opinion the solution is to create some visual interest in this area. If both you and your neighbour is replacing the porch a taller version might help. Personally I think the pebbledash looks like a lower quality product than the rest of the house and painting it would help lift it (as long as the neighbour also want to do it as half done would look worse). Ideally I would put a tall thin sash style window in the pebbledashed section but I recognise this might be inconvenient inside the house- but it could be faked by adding a window surround to the outside to match the stone on the bay....See MoreCan anything be done to improve the front of my house?
Comments (10)Oh thank you so much everyone for your ideas! I'm looking at it so differently now. I believe the house is an interwar ex local authority semi, but I googled some pictures as suggested and it does look older? Thank you ring, sarh123 Jonathan and Beano for your advice about the windows. Looking at it now, I think they are the reason I don't like the look of the house, particularly the downstairs window. Unfortunately sarh123, your lovely pictures have sold me on the multipane look which I probably can't afford right now! I will get a quote though just in case. Love the ideas for colours for the garage etc. Forzaitalia, do you have a particular paint colour in mind that would give the green/grey look like in the picture? The blue/black looks really good too though. Would it still look ok with the windows left white colourhappy? I'm looking forward to cutting back those trees too! The pictures of the planters are gorgeous and will definitely take on board what you have all said. I don't think I can remove the tree by the garage as it is not on my land though. The front door is old and not very secure so I don't know what to do with it yet. I agree, emanuelle that the window to the side doesn't look very good and the stone cladding on the bottom will probably look terrible when i have cut the trees back. I will have to see how the budget goes for that though as there is a lot to do inside - it is a bit of a mess in there... but at least it is mine:) It's amazing what a few pairs of fresh eyes can do so thank you very much!!!...See MoreCelery.
