How do you make a rented space feel like home?
Comments (38)We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Comments (23)I’ve just had a think about this. Bearing in mind, a standard UK king size mattress is 150x200... or really by converting exactly 5 feet into metric, it's 152.4, a standard King Size mattress would be 7.5 cm smaller than the frame, which means by placing it central to the slatted base, I would have +/- 3.5 cm gap at each side. Also, a mattress is never a square block, it has got its roundness, so allegedly, when considering you also place a mattress protector and the base sheet, the gap is most likely reduced further. So if I were to buy a ‘standard’ King Size mattress, I could use it – given the weight of the mattresses, I don’t think it is going to move around. A 5' mattress would allow me to tuck the duvet at foot-end as well as at the sides, or I could show off the frame. And of course, I’d find it easier to change the bed linen. Alternatively, the duvet normally overhangs at the sides of the bed, so the gap would be hidden from sight anyway. Technically, I can’t see anything stopping me from doing it. Also, due to the design of the bed, the mattress would be is partly inset into the frame, so the gap would only be seen (in terms of the slatted base), if looking at the bed from above, which I’d never do. Is this 'logical' thinking, or might I have missed something ?...See MoreChanges to a rental house
Comments (29)I would paint white throughout; ceilings, walls, every room. White is very popular at the moment and also much quicker and cheaper to keep going room to room, no clean up in between, no changing brushes and paint trays, no cutting in around ceiling edges and no half pots of paint left over from each room. White goes with everything and looks clean and fresh. Replace the bathroom if needs replacing. Replace floor coverings with vynal in kitchen and bathroom. Lay hardwearing, but not too expensive, carpet in all rooms and using the same carpet throughout worka out cheaper and helps the place flow. A four bed property needs an extra shower or bathroom. General rule is one bathroom for 3 bedrooms, more than 3 you need a second bathroom or shower room. An en suite would suffice if you can fit one in to the main bedroom or add a shower and toilet on the upper floor as OP has suggested....See MoreHelp - rental living room
Comments (18)I considered that, but I am not sure it would fit. Kitchen is more of an annex, 2 cupboards deep (funnily enough, I just snapped my measuring tape...), so the table couldn't go "in" the kitchen. There is maybe 1 metre room between kitchen edge and the chaise-long part of the sofa (and this can't be swapped to the other side as it was bought as a right hand chaise-long, if you know what I mean).. A bit of a nightmare!...See MoreHU-384946
