Advice please curtains and blinds

I plan to replace the living room curtains (see pictures) that were custom made 21 years ago. I love them but my girls think it's time to update. So here is my plan: replace the curtains of the small windows next to the fire place with Roman blinds. Replace the large curtain behind the French door with a wave heading curtain on metropole.

My questions are:

1. Do the Roman blinds need to be in recess or outside the window? Which would look better as I never draw the curtains on those window. If in recess would it cut too much light?

2. Do I need to dress the bay windows or French doors? As we are not over looked and never draw the curtains, and love the garden view unobstructed.

3. Should the height of the new wave curtain be increased right up to the ceiling ?

Hi Diana,

Whenever I specify Roman Blinds I recess them into the window and put dress curtains on each side (not functioning, purely for show and to soften the look)

The issue I have is that the failure rate on Romans is very high, the pull string mechanism is very delicate and can jam up after regular use.

Given the choice I would not specify them. My preferred solution is to inset plantation shutters into each window and then dress the outside with a simple pair of dress curtains each side or a modern swag over the head. I have done this on traditional interiors and ultra modern and they always look good. I never have any ongoing issues and the light quality the blades give is wonderful. (I prefer a large blade and avoid the central pole in favour of a hidden mechanism.)

Another interesting feature of plantation shutters is that in the evening you push the shutters up for privacy and this deflects the heat back into the room, it saves a lot of money !!

Hi Diana,

Some great questions there. Although I can't see any pictures attached, I'll try my best to answer them.

If you are looking for Roman blinds purely for dress reasons, fitting them outside of the recess will block less light, but usually light blockage isn't a big issue. If you'd like to have them stack slightly though, I might be inclined to fit them outside.

If you are happy without anything at your patio doors, then you might well like to lose the curtains there. You could always dress the bay window with dress Roman blinds like your other windows?

Curtains look lovely fitted above the windows as it elongates the space and creates a luxurious look. However, unless you have particularly low ceilings, I would stay a little below taking them all the way up. Here's an example of the curtain poles slightly above the windows.

If your French doors are Upvc I can recommend perfect fit blinds!! They fit onto the door (no screws) and are framed and don't get damaged ends!! Then curtains to finish off!!

It all depends whether your doors are still on order or you've had them fitted. Origin Bifolds have a fantastic selection of bifolding door blinds that work not just with their doors but all bifolding doors. They're available manual, automatic and solar controlled. Highly recommend them. Your other option is integral glass blinds that is blinds housed between the panes of glass of your double glazed units. There are only a few manufacturers of these the for reliability and quality you need to shop around. Pellini are the worlds largest designer of these blinds and they are made by their approved manufacturers, Morley Glass of Leeds being one in the UK and the biggest. Visit most quality double glazing showrooms and its the Morley product you'll probably see. With these blinds, quality is everything - you really do get what you pay for. There is no immediate drawback to these blinds other than some may find them more expensive when budgeting for their bifolds but the benefits they provide are excellent. The integral blinds, between glass blinds, integrated blinds or however they may be referred to are in a hermetically sealed unit. You can't get to them, you can't clean them - that is the purpose of them. The result is blinds that don't get in the way, blinds that don't need cleaning and when closed you can still enjoy the great appearance of your bifolding doors without obscuring them. In the unlikely event that the blinds fail, you have to replace the whole glass with the blind as it is one component. It's also worth knowing that these blinds can be fitted to existing windows and doors. If you have older bifolding, sliding or french doors and even windows, there is no reason why you can't have integral blinds if you want them. As long as the unit is 24mm or wider, it should be fine. It'll mean new glass fitted with blinds. Integral blinds fitted in the latest generation glass could even help to make your older windows far more energy efficient as well! You need to make a decision. Do you want the fabric to bring colour and pattern to your room or do you want to keep the whole room neutral? If you want pattern, the next decision is what style- check or plaid, stripe, floral or geometric? Then what colour(s). The room, as you point out, is not overly bright, but do you use this room much during the day or is it an evening room? You could opt for deep, rich colour that warms the room at night like burgundy, deep turquoise or terracotta. Adding patterned cushions with similar colours will splash colour around the room. Also, I'd replace the Roman blinds with matching fabric to the curtains, otherwise that will will lack colour. You could make a single curtain for each of those smaller windows in your main fabric and pull it to the side furthest from the fireplace, tied back. As to style, since you don't appear to be overlooked, floor length curtains on the front window and patio doors can be on a 50mm pole extending at least 150mm plus finials each of the windows. To stack them further back extend the pole more, but take care not to have wall showing just before the window recess. Tieing them back would allow more light to come in.
