Need ideas on colour scheme for kitchen

Hi

This is the kitchen of the new house that we will be moving into, I hate the light pink wall & dowdy tiles. Any ideas on what colour to pain the wall & colour of new tiles to match existing worktop etc, will be ber welcome.

You could paint the units and change the handles to update the kitchen.

I would paint the walls in a very light warm off white grey to create a neutral backdrop without making the room feel cold.

For the kitchen units you can go with a darker colour to add some contrast along with some bright nickel handles as shown below.

I would paint walls and shelving etc white and see how it looks and live with it a while

Hi Annabel Since you have the colour grey and wooden surfaces flowing through, I agree a bright orange like October Squash would bring out the warm hues in both colours and make for a really retro, cool vibe... You could pick it up with accessories and large patterned pillows too? If you aren't a fan of this sort of style then why not go for a subtle clay colour to connect the brown and grey? Hello, our customer had rustic ivory kitchen painted doors - she also chose leathered steel grey granite worktops (much softer, than say a polished granite worktop) and she choose a beautiful blue colour for her walls which I personally think went fantastically well together (and then her red range cooker also went beautifully with her colour scheme. if your thinking of replacing it within a year then I would just leave it as it is - its better to save your money on paint and tiles and buy better things for your kitchen later on. But if your not replacing it for a few yrs then I would agree and just paint it white.

Hi.

I think changing the kitchen look depends on budget and whether you are looking to make extensive changes in the near future.

If you are wanting to keep the current format off the house and working under a budget I would

Paint the walls an off white, light grey shade of paint.

Replace the wall shelving, maybe paint them the same colour as the wall to prevent them 'over crowding' the small space.

If you can, I'd replace the worktop and install an upstand; In place of tiles, I'd use scrubbable kitchen paint to make it look less busy.

if possible I'd update the cornice to update the kitchen.

If you are looking to replace the kitchen, I wouldn't make massive changes as that money could be utilised in other processes during major renovations.

If you are painting the walls, remember to use some masking
tape around the units so that you keep the paint off of them:-)

On the subject of painting, many people put their kitchen in
first then paint. When I put my kitchen in, I painted first (was fully aware
some touch up would be required) and then fitted the kitchen after. I got a
much neater finish (no roller splatter) and painting larger surfaces was so
much easier without any units in the way. Just draw a line where the base units
will be and don’t paint down that far and just cut into where the wall units
will be.

How do you do it? Paint the majority first or after install?

Thanks for your replies, your suggestions are appreciated. I was also thinking of painting the kitchen units to give them a new more updated look, what colour would you suggest? If the walls were painted an off white/light gray?

I'm not replacing the kitchen units etc for a few years yet. So painting the walls, tiles & units seems a more sensible & economical option.

Thanks Pavilion, I like the colour of those units in the pic, but my kitchen isn't as big as that one in the pic, will that colour go with my worktop? without making my kitchen look smaller?

Is your worktop blue or grey? I can't quite tell from the photo. Either painting the tiles the same as the wall colour, or removing them completely will help as the room won't look so crowded. However, removing them could leave you with a mess on the walls so painting them might be best for now. Agree about painting the shelves as well. Good luck.

I agree that the cupboards and wall would be improved by painting them white. However, painting kitchen cupboards and all the little bits around them can be quite time-consuming to get a good finish. Especially if the wood is varnished. Query if you want to invest the time/money in that. The look won't be the same as the photo posted by Pavillion Architecture because your floor is honey brown.

(It's not clear from your photo what colour your worktop is - is it blue? and the tiles grey? Or is the work top light grey? )

The greys in the photo above do have a hint of blue in them so they won't clash with the worktop.

If you want to be safe use the light grey with new handles, but if you want to be adventurous then paint the lower cabinets in the dark grey with new handles and paint the walls, shelves and tiles in the light grey to get the two tone look.

The floor looks to be a laminate floor if you had the budget I would change it to a white tile effect lino to add some balance.

I would also suggest binning the window dressings if the owner leaves them as the nets block out a lot of natural light.

So will the walls, tiles & shelf look fine in the same one paint colour?

I think I will paint the units a dark grey or that blue from the pic you recommended.

Its a dark blue/grey paint, yes the others will be fine in the light off white grey you don't want too much going on or the kitchen will be too busy.

you can always add in an accent colour in your accessories to add interest. This can then be easily removed if you change your mind last thing you want to do is repaint anything later on so sticking with grey/neutrals as your base give you more scope to change and adapt the design until your ready to replace the whole kitchen later on.

That's the kitchen with the window area & ugly tiles changed. Will paint the rest white, still umming & Rring over what colour to paint the kitchen units.

BBC 1 programme called 'Getting the builders in' recently showed a kitchen getting updated, the result for the money spent was well worth it.

Have you thought of sticker tiles? They have come on a long way and now are heat proof and wipe-able. They change the look without the hassle and cost and are available in so many options.

We just tried them as a stop gap until our kitchen is done next year and I am impressed.

i painted the tiles and they look good .

I used sticker tiles on the tiles border strips to cover the horrible peach border strip in the bathroom and yes they are great.
