UFH and engineered wood flooring

Hi Houzzers,

We've just received our delivery of engineered wood flooring and the supplier s (natural wood flooring company) state they are compatible with UFH. However our Plummer this evening says it would cause the wood to crack, the UFH can't go above 27degrees and we would have increase the heat slowly over the next 8weeks!

Please can anyone help or share their stories / experiences of this? I really don't want to change the floor in the cloakroom!

We've just done our whole house with engineered wood and UFH. We've only just put the heating on but were advised to start at 15 degrees and increase by 1 degree each day until we reach our desired temp, not going up above 27 degrees (which no one would ever need anyway!). We've only just bought the house so I can't comment on how it is going yet but we did a lot of research and there is absolutely no doubt that you can have engineered wood with UFH, lots of people do and I've not seen any horror stories of wood splitting or anything. Only thing is to make sure you don't put heavy rugs on it which might damage the boards if heat is trapped in an area.

I should add that we have wet ufh, I'm not sure if situation would be different with electric

Hi Sarah, Almost any floor covering can work well with underfloor heating. Each floor covering will provide a different level of thermal conductivity, making it easier or harder for your underfloor heating to meet the desired floor surface temperature. It's a good idea to choose an underfloor heating system that has been designed with your choice of floor covering in mind, as this will provide the most efficient heating for your home, as well as ensuring that sensitive floor coverings are protected. Engineered wood is an excellent choice for pairing with underfloor heating, as it is effective in transferring heat from the underfloor heating tube to the surface of the floor. It can also generally be laid directly over the underfloor heating without the need for an additional, structural floor deck - your underfloor heating supplier will be able to advise if this is the case. We would always recommend that you ask your flooring supplier if there are any special care conditions (such as maximum temperatures) for your flooring. If needed, your underfloor heating supplier should be able to provide a floor temperature sensor which limits the heat output from the floor to protect the floor coverings, whilst still ensuring that the desired room temperature is met. Kitchen flooring: engineered wood into wood effect tiles or grey

I tested white porcelain with bright pink hair dye when I bought them for my kitchen and the dye just wiped off. In 7 years the white tiles have never stained. I've dropped a Le Crueset cast iron pan lid and the lid got damaged but not a mark on the tile. I've had some small chips at the edges when furniture has been moved over them but it is minimal damage and the furniture should have been lifted rather than scrapped across the floor. You can buy full bodied porcelain which where the colour of the tile is right throughout the whole tile and if you get chips, you should not see a variation in colour. I love porcelain and would not use ceramic after having it. The best place to go for it, is your local independent tile retailer, rather than the big stores like Topps and Tile Giant. Not all tilers are keen on fixing them it because they are harder to cut and drill than ceramics and they need diamond blades and bits which cost more. They are well worth the investment though.

We're an Amtico house (Amtico Spacia Xtra ). I love it. Looks great, cleans easily, and our is slightly textured so feels nice underfoot. Our 'planks' have very slightly bevelled edges so that also gives the impression of real wood. I agree that it does 'ding' relatively easily, but we've only had one. It's been down coming on 3 years now (3 kids, 1 dog, 1 puppy, and lots of parties) and still looks as good as new. The fitters had to put some self levelling down throughout the downstairs, but the final finish is fantastic. Expensive, but IMO well worth the money. Engineered wood flooring - floating required glue?

You should listen to the supplier of the flooring. If they say no glue, then no glue. A floating floor shouldn’t need it. Presumably it’s a click fit?
