scum like marks on varnished parquet

a reclaimed floor has been varnished three or four times and there are now scum-like marks on it since it has dried. Can anyone help or advise ?

When you say scum like marks do you mean small bubbles?

I have just revisited this item and a thought has struck me. If you are intending to do the whole house room by room then it occurs to me that the hall should be the last area to do - simply to save tears. While you alter all the other rooms you will be carrying all materials and tools through the hallway - and of course that will increase the wear and tear factor, along with dings and scrapes from long and large bits of materials and furniture. I don't know the layout of the house, nor how badly other rooms need sorting out but I would start with rooms you actually use rather than simply pass through. Kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. In fact I would suggest sorting the living room first before you get so moved into it that vacating it to work on it would be problematic. The kitchen and bathroom don't tend to attract the amount of clutter and furniture that living rooms collect, so are easier to clear to basics to start work on. During this process your hallway may well end up being a makeshift store for materials while work is going on.

Taken me sometime as just wanted to exhale and enjoy the moment. Very long post sorry. Preparation Research the job - there are loads of videos on You Tube of what to do and how best to do it; I somewhat took the best from all. Buy more than needed as it's easier to take excess back rather than fall short. Blocks 1. Blocks no longer need to have all the bitumen taken off. There are now adhesives that can do the job without all the scraping. I found companies that could take all the bitumen off but it would have cost a tidy sum. I used Lecol 5500. But the sides and tongues still needed to be cleaned in order to get a good fit. 2. If the tongues are damaged the blocks can still be used. You could actually take them all off and still have a good finish. I wasn't going to do that to close to 3000 blocks. Again, I found companies that would do this. 3. Spend some time grading the blocks - size, height, wear, complete (tongue). It really does help when laying, and therefore sanding and the finish, as you then don't have huge amounts to level out. Surface 1. Ensure you have a sound subfloor. Luckily I already had one but had to still take it up as I put some sound proofing down under. 2. Make sure level with no screw heads locking out and no squeaks as the last thing you want is to lay it and the floor squeaks all about. Laying 1. Measure, check and double check. Including borders and expansion gap. 2. As shown in the videos lay a crown line: The centre of the room is the backbone of the whole floor, it ensure rows are straight going forward. 3. Start early, especially if you think you can do it in one day. I took a week, doing some everyday after work. But this helped as the previous rows were then hard and didn't move. The adhesive will be a bit slippy and moveable until it's dry so don't walk on it. 4. Lay each row 'dry' to ensure that they will sit together before applying the adhesive. It takes longer and maybe a little messy ( adhesive overlay ) but worth it. 5. For the border, overlay where you've measured where the border should be (making sure not to add adhesive over your marking ) and then use the saw to take off the excess. As it wouldn't have had the adhesive on it'll come up super easy and leave with a clean finish. Sanding, Filling and finishing. 1. If sanding yourself find a firm that has a Trio and belt sander. Absolutely brilliant machines. As they have three rotational disks perfect for parquet as difficult to sand along the grain with belt sander. I used the belt first until the 60 paper grade and then switched to the Trio. 2. Use 60 or 80 dust mixed with resin for filling. Again loads of videos on the Tube. I used Lecol 7500 resin. I filled it twice sanding in between. 3. Research the finish you want and if not sure take an example to a wood flooring specialist to get their advice.

Also, top tip, folks! If installing an island with plumbing/electrics in it, make sure you have an access panel somewhere to get to them - especially for the plumbing. I speak from bitter experience in the last house. This is a particular problem with Belfast sinks mounted, you guessed it, under a stone worktop, meaning you can't easily take the sink out. I had this in my old house - learned my lesson the hard way, A bad situation when your dishwasher or waste disposal unit are leaking or need replacing, and you find out that there are a load of connections you need to get to that are hidden behind the sink. Even worse if that Belfast sink has an Insinkerator waste disposal plumbed into it and the dishwasher is plumbed into that - the bits you need to get to are directly behind the unit, and not easily reachable from the space in the cabinet under that sink, even if you cut out the back panel. Very awkward. So that stone worktop has to come off (not realistic) or you have to cut through a cabinet back or two with a jigsaw (better option by far - but you do it very carefully). Which is what I did - replacing the hacked up back panel with an access panel held in place by magnets, for the next time. Trust me, it's easier to do this at installation stage! This island is 90cm wide, and one side is the seating area, which is behind the row of front cabinets, which include sink, fridge, dishwasher etc. The whole kickpanel in the seating area will be mounted on a stud frame which has six metal threads installed, so that the panel (plywood, as we determined above) bolts to these six screws. Need access to the plumbing and drain? Drop the panel in minutes, and everything is in front of you and easily accessed...

Hi Sarah, A grey toned floor would work perfectly through the kitchen, dining room and the lounge. A wood effect will help to give the rooms texture and warmth, whilst the grey will tie the black, white and green together.
