Hallway and stairs finished,opinion,please
Hello,we recently finished our hallway and stairs...any opinion about it..please. should we choose white wall colour instead of green? What our mistake was here?What do you change here..or everything looks disaster and need change everything ..any opinion helps,thanks.

Comments (7)Hello, In my opinion it could work if you select items carefully. I have collected some images for your inspiration, on the second one there is a patterned carpet which reminds me of victorian tiles, the dark wooden floor looks just amazing with the exposed brick wall as they are almost the same colour. However that interior is contemporary style considering the artworks on the wall. If I was in your case probably I would have the floor painted in dark, I would get a neutral colour carpet or a carpet with similar style to the one on the second image. The costings to get a carpenter to build a simple but effective display unit (see below) will probably be around £200-250. Comments (11)Hi Charlotte, I would paint the walls in a paint with warm undertones to tie in with the warm tones of the wood. For example F&B pigeon would look great. Elephants breath, even FB Cornforth white. But also what colours do you like or are you drawn to usually? just make sure the paint has warm undertones and not cool. I would also suggest getting some lining paper and some tester pots of these colours I suggested or others you like, paint a large piece of the paper in each of the paint colours, and then pin these to the hallway walls, trying them in various areas of the hallway to see what they look like at different times of day, as the colours can look quite different in different lights. Comments (2)I would consider bringing your dining table out into the space next to the door to inner courtyard and enlarging that doorway if you can to allow more light. The kitchen looks a bit dark and you have a lot of wasted space that I think could be put to better use. It looks like you have a small window from kitchen to inner courtyard could that become full height fixed window again to allow more light in to kitchen space. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI like your chandelier. I would eliminate curtains, they look odd on staircase. One is long and other is short. Put runner all the way. Wall art is too high. Bring it down. When it comes to hanging pictures, the standard rule of 'hang at eye level' .
I would eliminate valances, they are dated. Use instead some natural blinds.

6 years agoWhite and cream usually don't mix well, as lots have pointed out. I'd go for the darkest green out of your pictures to paint the white wall and bring it all together better.
A textured door curtain would be better than white, to give a bit of warmth and colour. I'd also paint the front door white to match all the others and add a runner that matches the stair carpet.
A colourful runner to match your paintings will also work.

6 years agoThe white wall and curtains look too cold. I would put a wallpaper or darker or neutral colour on that white wall, put lots of photos and pictures going up the stairs to break up the green a bit. Add a runner, plus console table with mirror above it instead of the 3 pictures in front of the radiator. Put the small plant in the hall on the console table. Take down the curtains, and put a linen blind up over the stairs. Good luck!

6 years agoThank you a lot to everyone,so many advice and opinions. So I think the next step here will be front door painting!
When we planned to paint this hallway we thought we want to have spaciuos,light,fresh and airy look..but it was unluckely to us.
We thought that green colour helps to look hallway like we imagine and doesn't look dull like white,as we have to choose from.
I like how this green goes with white doors but it is too greenish and not to gentle to eyes. And now we are tired from this colour.
What do you think about this colour pallet,is that match here,and it is better still mix with green or eliminate green from all walls?
I am really worry to do any other change after this one disaster...- PRO

6 years agoI think that the colours you chose 'greens' go well with your flooring. Maybe not quite so bright, but green is a warm colour in general and you have a very warm, tan / cream floor. Cool colours like white and grey will not go with the floor either.
I would seriously change the flooring. Pick something neutral, dark wood, hard wearing. It will go nicely with the green, and if you want to tone it down a little do so.
Trying to match anything to the floor apart from warm tones, will not work.
Remove the door curtain as it doesn't serve a purpose - or put up a heavier weight one.
If you like the grey, which works fabulous with white and with your carpet, then change the flooring for an Ash wood. UKflooringdirect
You can see that this colour too would work with many shades of green and the white though. It's the flooring that is really the biggest problem with your choice of colours.

6 years agoHi. I don't know which way the hall and landing face in terms of light but farrow and ball French grey might work (1st and 3rd pic). As you can see it would work with the warm toned floor, black carpet, white woodwork and the mahogany if you wanted to keep that unpainted. I'd also add a slim console over the radiator repeating the black in the frame or something. The colour does change throughout the day (it's more green than grey) so try testers in different places in natural and artificial light

6 years agoFor me it's the black carpet on the stairs and the tiled flooring that is not working with the fresh look of lime green and white. Personally I would paint all the walls to a pale beige or stone colour or as previously suggested french grey or similar. That way you won't have the expense of changing the flooring.
I still think you could make the green work though. First I would change the carpet on the stairs to a beige that closely matches the flooring. Paint the white walls in a much paler olive green. Definitely paint the entrance door to white to keep everything fresh looking. Runner on the floor and bigger house plants. Here's some inspiration,

It has a pine/ orange floor like your tiles.
Why not get a test pot and paint some butchers paper and see what you think. Paint ALOT OF PAPER and blu tak them up all over.
You can ask the fish and chip shop for some paper.Give them a quid....
I'm sure they won't mind.
I like the Pic cos of the white / grey.Not all grey.
But others think it may clash with tiles.. I'm not sure .

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI think the grey will work, but it will have to be a warm grey to work with your flooring. Plus, you really need to change the carpet as it just wont' sit well.
Instead of using brilliant white, you can use a softer white that will work both with a warmer grey and the flooring. A beigey / grey carpet makes everything start to soften up a little. The carpet for the stairs and landing should go with the floor - any of these 'greige' based.
