Oak and white Kitchen wall and floor help
We have been planning our kitchen on and off for the last several weeks and we have finally nailed down the layout, worktops and cupboards. We are now thinking about wall tiles, flooring and also wall paint colour.
The layout of the kitchen will be as below. We have decided on a oak butcher block worktop and white Savedal doors from IKEA (ignore the grey fronts in the design we are waiting for updated 3D renderings).

We like white metro tiles from the wall and splash back but feel white cabinet fronts and tiles may be a bit plain (too much white perhaps?) and have started exploring other colour options. We have been considering grey (again maybe a bit boring?) or perhaps a more bold colour such as these glass green tiles:
Regarding flooring we were initially thinking of a dark grey/black slate effect ceramic tile or LVT. However, a lot of kitchen with wood countertops tend to go for a wooden floor so we are open to this idea if it generally goes better. We have requested a sample in this ceramic wood tile:
The kitchen is north facing so does not get direct sunlight. It is a tenement flat built around 1900 with 3.1m high ceilings and very tall windows so it still gets a fair amount of light considering there is just one north facing window.
In the hallway we have exposed original wood floorboards stained with a walnut colour stain. We were initially concerned that going from real wood flooring in the hall to a ceramic wood tile or LVT may be very noticeable.
For wall colour we are thinking something fairly natural to try and keep the room light. Perhaps white or a warm light grey (e.g Farrow and Ball Elephants breath).

Comments (8)Hi Oak and Broad! That's just it, it didn't say what brand only that it was brushed natural oiled finish. The Pamphlet states special cleaning with intensive wood cleaner and to use Maintenance Oil (natural or white) the white apparently gives a limed appearance. The Manufacture of the wood is Natures Own European Oak. It doesn't look as though it is brushed either, it looks dipped in possibly a wax oil the finish as it is oiled back and front and there are certain parts in the wood that does not look to be oiled especially in some knots. Which is why I don't really want to leave it especially a whole year before re-oiling. I have enclosed a couple of pics but I really don't know what information you will be able to see apart from its a dull finish Thank you for any guidance you can give. Comments (3)Have you considered polished concrete floor if you are so keen on a grey floor? With tile/concrete floor, you might want to consider underfloor heating though. Comments (39)Jonathandb1972, I was thinking of going with a grout that is the same colour or lighter than the grey tile. The hex will be grouted in a medium grey. This has already been done in the loo (the hex) and looks great. Neither are grouted in the above picture. Do you think there will still be issues with where the grout lines are if they are the same or lighter than the tile? Also, where the hex tile in the shower meets the grey tile will mainly be covered by the shower's profile. However, the shower only goes up to about 2m, so there will still be a visible "meeting" of tiles above that. My builder is a little concerned about how this will look as he will have to cut small pieces of tile to fill up the edge, which may stain once they start grouting. Comments (15)In my opinion it is the saturation level of the paint that is the problem. The beauty of your kitchen is the natural flooring and the wooden worktops, it looks earthy. This is swamped by the blue paint, it just looks wrong. Without seeing the cupboard door colours close up it is tricky but I would suggest looking for something a bit darker than the cupboards but with the same hue. If you want a strong contrasting wall a deep olive green would work as it would balance the wood and the purpley greys....See More

Diminishing Returns
6 years agoNot directly related but I have been looking at tiles for a north facing bathroom and the Farrow and Ball website ( http://www.farrow-ball.com/light-affects-colour/content/fcp-content ) recommended avoiding greens or greys.... We did something similar recently in our last house and had parquet vinyl beside an oak floor in the hall and it was actually fine, especially as there was a small mat near the door and they were different colours and styles of wood. We had plain white tiles but not in the brick pattern which I felt was more modern. Photo below but you can't see the yellow wallpaper on the opposite wall which, with hindsight and unlimited budget I would have brought round the top of the cupboards as well but even a nice colour paint would suit and easier to change than tiles or flooring. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoMan About The House - The DIY & Odd Job Handyman I think you are right about flooring being the tricky part. I’ve attached a few pictures of the hallway floor (it’s only a small square hallway) and the current join with the kitchen floor.
We would like to avoid staining the oak worktops and just use Osmo/Danish oil on them.
The victorian style tile is nice and I think looks great in a hallway but I feel in a 15m2 kitchen it may be a bit much? If you have any examples of these being used in a large space it would be great to see.
So going for a grey tile is maybe the best idea? We like these large dark grey slate tiles but they are sadly out of our budget and also maybe too dark?

6 years agoDaisy England yes the tall unit to the right is to hide a big unsightly boiler. I agree it is not ideal but it is what it is and it feels fairly balanced.

Misha M - could you share some pictures of your kitchen? We did consider a feature wall. I guess it would be the one by the cooker or opposite it. We thought it may be too much given it is 5m wide by 3.1m high?
@OnePlan Good point about the fridge infill. There is around 50mm wiggle room on that wall so it shouldn’t be an issue. We quite like the grey doors in the rendering, however, IKEA do not have a grey door in the style we like. We could consider other kitchen sellers but were fairly keen on Ikea for the quality you get for the price.
Yes the dishwasher is in the corner and a washing machine by the fridge freezer. Perhaps we would be better moving them and getting a washing machine where the door opens fully to the left? Good spot this!
In the design the dining table in very large and we will probably go for something smaller to give a bit more room. We have been looking at getting a new table at some point and have are eye on a couple:

6 years agoHere is a slight tweaked 3d rendering with white units and a warm colour wall and floor. Still not really happy with the walls or floors. Hopefully when samples arrive this week I will have more ideas.

6 years agoYour kitchen looks like it will be gorgeous! We've just installed a new oak and white kitchen and found these tiles from Mandarin stone which we absolutely love, they're a green/grey with oak effect pattern. We put down concrete effect vinyl on the floor which meets the parquet in the rest of the room and we are also really pleased with. I've attached photos - you may not like it at all but we're pleased!

I think they will sit well with your hallway flooring. They're slightly on the old / industrial scale of things.
Also, I noted that you weren't staining your worktops. I feel this might not work so well with the table / wood floor as you'll be introducing not only a new surface finish but a different wood colour on top. I'd have the work tops the same colour as the hall floor. The dark wood would make the units stand out more.

Just had a thought - you might want to check out Amtico - it's a high quality laminate and they do loads of wood effect stuff. We've always had great experiences with it when we've used it.
