Advice please on render/roughcast to modernise 1970's house exterior

I'm in the middle of a side extension, next stage is to render/roughcast exterior. My house is a semi so I'm considering keeping the brick finish at the ground floor and rendering 1st floor and extension in order to still tie in with next door. Builder thinks I should render full house. I'm so rubbish at this type of thing....help!

We have a very similar style of house and are also torn between playing it safe with white or light cream upvc windows to brighten the exterior or being a little more adventurous choosing grey. We are also having to replace all guttering, soffits and fascia ( we have 3 dormers to front and 3 at the back) so we are wondering about combining grey window frames, guttering and soffits with white fascias and white front door and white garage door. We are also supposed to decide by tomorrow but I am worried that getting it wrong will be a massive disappointment every time arrive home! i wish there was some way to "photoshop" the options onto an image of our house. Sorry not to offer any constructive advice but I found it reassuring to find another house owner struggling with a decision just like me!

Think very carefully if you consider bringing the front door(s) forward. As an earlier poster has commented, it is not a good thing when it is pouring with rain and you are fumbling with keys to get in. If you do decide to bring the doors forward then I would look at fitting a glass canopy over the doors to provide a bit of shelter from the elements. I would point out that arches are not a particularly contemporary feature so it might require squaring off to get the right style. I would get rid of the hanging tiles in the gable. Render the entire front and paint a uniform colour. Grey being very much "in" at the moment. However, white paint with grey doors etc. would work well. I would also take the opportunity to have outside lighting fitted. Something in brushed stainless steel would work.

Thank you Gina for the advice! I think it does have good lines - glad you think so too! I don't think our budget will extend to rendering the whole front of the house unfortunately. We will definitely be getting a new front door - and we are reluctant to paint the garage doors so will match the front door with them I think. I should have said the upstairs window will become a Juliet balcony. The cladding on the top dark area is the same as under the front window. We were thinking of replacing the cladding with more contemporary grey horizontal cladding but we're still left with the problem then of what to do with the brickwork ?!

Maybe you could post a few more pics from different angles and further back? Colourhappy, I love reading your posts especially about colour because I’m interested in colour and find tones really hard, but here I don’t think it looks difficult, it looks to me that railings on the bottom of this house won’t clash with next door? The red tiles on the top are next to their white boarding and both separated from bottom by the overhang. ? I liked painting bricks white idea but since the doors and windows are different white upvc I thought that might be be difficult and lose any definition? Plus if you plant for example fatsia in the gravel which grows to around the 1.6 m height when not sheltered that breaks it up too.
