Paint dilemma in bathroom - please help

We have a large north facing bathroom with a vaulted ceiling and dark beams. It is currently painted in farrow and ball hay (which is a bit dirty from some smoke damage). We have tried farrow and ball Parma grey on a small section and are worried we are making a mistake. In theory we should go with a yellow based colour based on the light but we went with something else. It does look very blue. Should we stop and go for either hay again or a different colour or should we persevere with the Parma grey?

Hi there,

You may want to rethink the colour if you're worried it's going to make the room cold, the best thing to do is get some samples with varying blue to beige tones and paint them on thick paper (please not on the wall as it makes it so difficult to cover up!) and place in various areas round the room. If you then go and look at them at different times of day you'll see the light and how it affects the colour, making it easy to see which colour works best. I'd probably not go for more than 3/4 samples as you might get confused!

Colour is so subjective, it's a difficult one. I had a Parma Gray North facing bedroom years ago (inherited) and it actually made me feel quite depressed. Hay is at the other end of the temperature spectrum. How about something in the middle that would complement the wood. Clunch is a lovely pale neutral that has some warmth but is lighter than Hay. Shaded white is a beautiful colour that can be teamed with Shadow White and Drop Cloth. Tester time.

I think the best thing to do is use boards that looks like mosaic tiles, it's from ABBuilding supplies, you can stick it over tiles and then the furniture. It's very cost effective.

Hi guys, I am back again with a bathroom query, I have an image attached. I really don't like the current layout for this bathroom and I'm thinking if we move the toilet to the wall on the left under the sink and put the bathroom vanity where the toilet currently is so that this is the first thing the person sees when the door is open. Do you think this works? Again advice is hugely appreciated. Thanks Emanuelle. I do like those. I've got a high maintenance ensuite (my choice!) so easy maintenance in here is good particularly with the fun of cleaning under the bath! Thanks, the mirror was from Zara, I've just looked and it's on sale ATM for £50 :)

Hi Sarah, As you can see a square shower tray is going to work to much better than a rectangle shower tray. It is going to allow you much more space and open up the room. I would suggest keeping the base of the room light (tiles and paint), and then go ahead and incorporate darker shades. On the wall, where the sink sits, add a large mirror to enhance the space in the room, this is a simple and easy way to trick the eye into thinking a room is bigger than it is. A wall hung toilet and skin cabinet is going to increase the floor space of the room. From a decorative side of things I would recommend black framed glass around the shower, this is a substile dark colour introduction without over doing it, and the glass will still keep the room open.
