Garden Shed Location best place please

Hi I have a choice of 3 locations for a shed and would appreciate any advice on best location thanks. The bungalow /garden is south facing at the rear with a open plan lounge/kitchen diner .Please see attached pictures.Shed is 10ftx 6ft.

Position 1 West Facing behind Shed

Position 2 This area has lots of Sun from around 2pm until late evening and an old slab 4m x 4m already exists. Could deck this area out and build a Pergola .

Position 3 Shadiest bit of the garden shed can go length ways or sideways but no natural path to it

I can see why sheds can be thought of as ugly wooden boxes for storing messy garden stuff and junk but I don't think they have to be so. Here's a photo of my recent addition (beach hut style) and having an interesting pathway leading to it makes the garden that much more enjoyable. I still store junk in it but it's pretty to look at:)

Hi, I'd go for position 3 and create a new path running from the house on the left. Position 1 I think would block a lot of light into the house window where as position 2 would be better suited for a nice pergola and sitting area.

I'd go for position 1. It will be to the side of the house therefore will be out of the way. The other 2 positions mean that from the house the view is of the shed rather than trees and your neighbour's rather nice octagonal shed. That is unless your shed is one of those attractive log cabin type building that look attractive in their own right.

We just need someone to advocate position 2 and then we would have really helped you (not).

The worst? Missed the last train from Dublin to Belfast and booked in at the 'hotel' across the road to be sure of getting the first train in the morning. Spent the night wide awake hoping the lock would hold, and my second line of defence - a chair wedged under the door handle - would kick in if the lock gave, while a steady procession of drunks knocked the door and rattled the handle whilst promising me a night of bliss.

All depends on your budget and what you need it for. Get the best you can afford. Brick would be the best, but also the most expensive. If you wanted timber, 90% of off the shelf sheds are poor construction. Custom built timber shed on site would be better. Most metal sheds suffer from damp...high humidity, cold metal, condensation = damp and mould. If you wanted to repair your shed, fix all the leaks, and then insulate the inside to stop the condensation.

Not your question - but if it was possible to take out the wall between the hall and your main open plan area at the back, it would open up a view right through the house on entry and stop the rooms either side becoming corridors? Open the front door - double doors to left -> front room, doors to right -> play room, view in front to stairs and right through into the dining area...? Put the wall back between the living room and kitchen and you have a private space (when not entertaining) TV wall/Private living room/VIP area LoL etc. + one opinion on practicality - if those yellow dots are downlighters - less is more - LED or not the da* things blow or flicker and half the time are not all working at once etc. Afterthought - looks like the playroom is the old garage. it also looks like you have no access to the back. I'd strongly consider keeping the garage at least for bikes/storage at the front etc - even half of it as a utility room if the water in/out is close. Removing garages seems like a good idea since modern cars don't fit in them - on the other hand there are plenty of uses for that space aside from cars - especially if any future buyer has cycling/motorcycling/watersports/classic car type hobbies. Absence of a garage is an instant rejection.

What do you keep in it? Do you need to access it regularly, for example, if you have a bike you ride every day, I would go for position 1. As Embzop says, it is least visible from the house.

I would put an evergreen shrub or ornamental tree in position 3, and chairs for drinking aperol spritz in position 2.

Position 3 definitely! Agree having it in position 1 would be good for bikes etc, but it would be the first thing you see when you look out of that window and make it feel dark and enclosed

Id build an attractive looking shed at position 3 with a wide pathway running down from position one to the shed. I'd then have small shrubbery or plants on either side.

Many thanks for all the comments , appreciate it greatly , I think I will be going for position 3 , with the narrow 6ft side facing the house which I can then screen with a nice Trellis and climber . The shed is only a standard Pent shed from a local supplier nothing special and will only be used for general garden equipment /tools etc .

I would go for closest option to the house if it is not blocking light from any windows,I always find when one needs something from the shed or wants to put something into the shed .IT'S RAINING .

Thanks for advice Roberta I will be building one myself eventually to the side near the house but had to Bite The Bullet and get one ready made so i can get some free space in our utility room pretty quickly . The one I have ordered would block light so going for Position 3 ,

Go as close to the house as possible we moved our shed to the bottom of our 100ft garden and the following winter it snowed. Our rubber boots were in the shed and my husband had to tie plastic bags over his shoes in order to trek down there to retrieve them. Being close to the house is more practical - take a look at 'Shed of the year' on television some brilliant ideas...

As others have said, I'd keep it out of view when looking from the house. I'm also a fan of lower storage boxes than sheds - they are unobtrusive and easier to disguise by putting plants in pots near them. Nothing much that I store is tall; most taller things (broom, rakes, hoes) can lie flat. I've never really understood the point of a tall shed.

As far away from the house as possible with some screening, just make sure it's in a position that doesn't throw shade on apart of the garden where you like to sit.

Yes I was going to suggest as far away from the house as possible because we live in britain you dont get much sunshine so you want as much light to be able to get into your house during the darker months! put a shed in position 1 and you lose that light immediately! Id' suggest position 3 since your garden isn't huge it is defintely not too far to walk to it to fetch your bike if you do indeed keep a bike in there?
If you are looking to cut costs then position 2 if you aren't going to be using the seating area in the morning. As you are south facing I would assume you would generally get a good deal of light in your garden anyway so yes if you want to save then position 2 and position 3 if you prefer to use the patio in the morning as position 3 will more then likely cast an afternoon shadow of sorts hard to tell scale of garden from photos but it looks to be not very big.

Thanks Michael the garden is a reasonable size ie 16 M Wide and 16 M deep. We have loads of space for dining out on the existing patio but after abot 3 pm in the Summer position 2 gets the late evening sun so I am now looking at building a small brick shed in position 2 using old bricks / or maybe a Pergola with climbing plants etc .

Sounds good, best of luck! I'm starting a log cabin/summer house build today. Let's hope it stays dry til i get the roof on? Fingers crossed
