removing chimney breast & pot

My neighbour wants to remove the chimney pot at the rear of our Victorian Semi so that he can take out chimney breast on his side of the property.. anyone have any experience of this? we are not sure how this could impact on our house etc

You need to find out a bit more from your neighbour. Most likely you have a shared chimney stack on the roof that will remain but there is likely more than one chimney pot and your neighbour will be capping one as he probably intends to take out some of his chimney breast further down and put in a beam to support the chimney further up. This shouldn't affect you as you likely have a separate chimney breast on your side of the party wall- it is most likely only the visible bit on the roof that is shared and this is unlikely to change much -although he can probably do it without removing the pot.

We've inherited a post-war ex local authority house and we're going to totally modernize it throughout. Our question is: Since the living room is not wide enough, 3.5 meters approx., the length being about 7 meters, should we remove the chimney breast to add more width or leave it as it is. I should add that the protrusion into the living room is further enhanced as the adjoining kitchen wall steals some of the width of the living room. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
