if this is a real fire, how was it installed without a fireplace.

It looks to me as though the depth of the recess in the fireplace is no deeper than the surround of the fireplace and the hearth. Therefore it is placed on to a standard wall.

It depends on two things:- Budget- often chimneys need some maintenance before you can safely use them, you might need to bring in gas, you might need to do some building work. Secondly if want heat or just the flames. You could put in a log burner or living flame fire- both will need the chimney to be safe. Alternatively you could have a flueless gas fire that will give the effect but without heat. You can also get flames from gel burners and electric fires with TV screen type flames.

We have been putting TVs above fireplaces for 15 years now! You should leave at least 100cm clearance from the top of the fireplace and if the wall is thin, add heat insulation behind the TV. Both of the fires you have posted links for will be no good unless you are prepared to build an internal or external chimney breast. if you go into a fireplace showroom you will see that contemporary flame effect gas fires sit behind the mantlepiece so you will been about 45 cm behind the wall. Moving the gas to the lounge depends on where it is in the house and how your gas engineer can do it.... for instance if you have a floor with a space under in it is a lot easier than if you have concrete floors (as in lots of brand new houses). Instead of these gas fire ideas consider an electric flame effect fire. These are much slimmer.

It could have a class 2 flue behind it. A big pipe goes in the wall and vents out of the roof. The fire could therefore be say 4 inches deep and if it's "real" it would be gas.

The flues/chimney stacks in a his property ran on the outside of the external walls.
