Ceiling light dilemma

Hi - Just about to decorate through lounge dining room. Style is probably eclectic preferring to recycle/up cycle furniture. I need to start looking at ceiling lights. Thinking pendants but I don't like to see the 'mechanics' of a shade or the bulb. Leaves me with a globe style shade I didn't really want. Would like them (need 2) to be a feature. All ideas massively welcome and will be gratefully received.

Hi there. this sounds like an interesting project and dilemma. there are a couple of options you could entertain in this instance. 1- drop the centre ceiling so its level withe the perimeter ceiling but leaving a shadow gap of 150mm. using a profile such as the DsL profile below you can easily drop in some linear led . Note the shadow gap in the ceiling of the second image. You can then add in downlighters in the dropped ceiling for general light to highlight that particular zone. 2- You could use the same profile but install it to the lower perimeter ceiling so that the light washes into the raised ceiling such as the picture below. This will add height and by adding in downlighters to the middle areas you can define that zone. Pendants instead of or as well as the downlights can further enhance the living zone depending on if you have an island/table over which to hang some decorative lights. I’ve had a dark 11 foot (330cm)ceiling, for same reason. It sucked the light from the south facing room. Instead, try a rather deeper shade than walls, if they’re light. And if a picture rail is put up, about 12” (30 cm) to 18” (45cm) from ceiling, depending on the ceiling height, it’s a really good idea to carry ceiling colour all the way down to the picture rail. Doing that also has the benefit of not making the room feels as though you’re at the bottom of a well, if the room happens to be square. You could also, if you’re redoing flooring, paint or carpet the floor in the same colour as ceiling.

The currently popular wire cage fittings with the oversized lamps ( bulbs) with obvious filaments might suit your style.There are lots around in different colours and sizes
