POLL: Exposed brick - yay or nay?
Comments (32)I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for......See MoreIt’s go, Go ....... GO !!! – Kitchen / Diner project.
Comments (81)Well, the chippies van was up the drive when I got home from work - a little unexpected. At first I thought that he was sleeping with the Mrs, but then I remembered that he needed to finish the skirting boards. He's done a cracking job - quite a few tricky internal/external corners, plus the corners not being exactly 90 degrees he was back and forth to his saw all the time. He really did a stirling job. It was 13 meters of skirting in total - which took him 4.5 hours in total (over 2 evenings) and it cost me £90. Considering I was origionally going to do it, it could well be the best £90 I've spent on this whole kitchen. I need to get a lick of paint inside the alcove that's pictured. Our little fishtank will be returning in there, but as it's out I may as well do it. When we get the bar stools, and dining room table & chairs I will update again. So: What would I change/add/remove ADD - Somewhere to hang the tea-towels. We have some on the inside of a cuboard, but they keep falling off. Maybe I need some slightly more expensive 'hangers'. The space where they could have gone we put a spice rack/draw thingie - that's probably better though. ADD - We forgot about the bin! Now we have our pedal-bin basically kicking around the kitchen. The Mrs has already filled the cupboards to maximum capacity so I'm having trouble getting an internal cupboard one past her. I think I may just fit one then deal with her later. The bin has gravitated to a semi-perminant place, but with the kids trying to be *cough* helpfull the wall is already beginning to get the odd splatter of 'stuff' where they just throw their food in the general direction of it. Last night I said 'Well, why don't we just put it in the utility room' - She shot that idea down instantly as she obviously isn't happy about the extra 4 steps that it would take to walk all-that-way into another room. Poor thing! Typical woman lol. ADD - At the start of the project I would have got the electricians to chase in another mains wire from the fusebox so that it comes out of the kitchen wall centrally to the back garden, then I would put a PIR Security Light in. I know that it's not a big job by any means, and I could, and probably will, do it myself over the coming weeks but if I could have had it without a wire on the outside of the house then that'd would have been perfect. Also, thinking about it, I would have actually got him to do it at the front of the house as well as he re-wired the whole downstairs with new fusebox etc....See MoreWork on kitchen has started
Comments (54)I meant on the white doors you can see watermarks, sometimes. Depending on the light. But otherwise they just look clean and without marks. Funnily enough, after I replied to you, I wiped some finger marks off the black doors and where the doors were wet from wiping, all kinds of marks showed up that you normally never see. And you don't see them on dry doors at all. They were probably dog nose marks, but you can't see those at all on dry doors 🤷🏼♀️ I just wanted a white peninsula and black oak tall cabinets. The doors needed to be a specific height to fit between the floor and the steel beam. Hacker does made to measure more easily than other brands. So that's why the black doors are from Hacker, not Next. And the handleless fronts of Next feel really nice, slightly rounded at the edges and enough space for fingers. I have arthritis in my fingers so tested loads of handleless kitchens. Most were too sharp around the edge (ouch) or did not have enough space to put your fingers comfortably around the front. If you can try out different brands or models, you'll know what I mean. I don't know how much spots or 'dirt' black Next doors will show. But wiping with a damp cloth is a quick and easy solution. Last week I was in a home where they had a gloss cream kitchen and that showed loads of finger marks and I don't know what else, but I do know that I'd much rather have my non glossy kitchen doors 😉 Our kitchen fitter did say that he loves working with Hacker, because of the quality and finish. I think the full name is Hacker Systemat. But I love both cabinets and as I said: would choose either or both brands again....See Morehandless kitchen
Comments (41)In 2016 we had plans to add 5x10m extension to living side of house (bungalow) Booked builder had every detail agreed for whole refurb throughout. Weeks before builder started November - we changed to two extension....making the kitchen extension smaller - the actual open plan room is not far from it square metres but it’s an L shape with differing ceiling heights. Previous was huge and full vaulted ceiling. So since then we have been making new decisions on the spot as the old ones didn’t suit this. Whichever way you go you will wonder what if..... your mind likes to tell you it would better. Don’t lose sight on why you have made those decisions .. it all can get blurred sometimes...See MoreOnePlan
