Future Houzz: Where did you want to live when you were growing up?
Comments (20)I'd say we all want to live in that lovely house we passed whilst on the way to go brambling with a jam jar in our hand and high hopes of a good day. Maybe it was the gates, or the gravel driveway that appealed, and it even had stone pillers and Georgian windows . And I'd wait and stare, and wait and stare curious about who lived there and hoping they'd drive out allowing me a quick glimpse of another world. Them. Then I'd feel ashamed stood there in my jumble-sale-new clothes, bothered that perhaps someone might come out and ask me what was I doing. I learnt it was a very rich person home, a shipbuilder who owned a shipping fleet and I wanted to copy him, if he could do it- then so could I. So that man and that lovely house blighted my life for the best, and it still does. I love this house and stop outside it whenever I pass by. I'm heart broken, and I'm a big strong man and big strong men are not allowed to cry. That adopted house is my comfort blanket, my home, and I go to sleep and it becomes mine. This is my lounge, this my garden, this gate is mine, and please come in when you go brambling. Don't walk on by, share it with me, you can adopt upstairs or the fireplaces, or ceiling coving and florals, I won't mind....See MorePass on your renovation tips please!!
Comments (18)Hello Dub M, Lovely good to know, there are a lot more than just those two ideas though, so just like you would, I do a lot of research as part of my services include procurement..I'm always looking for something interesting and innovative. Yes you have it absolutely right... You need to look at the house as a whole and get a feel for what you want the bones to look like, the colours and the fixtures and fittings including the furnishings.. For sure keep things in mind, and when you get in the space that's when you can start to flesh out ideas when you're near to completion of works.. .. (Kitchen and bathroom aside as they will need your more immediate attention.. Colours and flooring are best looked at as one and that doesn't mean they have to match.. From there you can work in the rest... It's how I do it anyway.. Furniture too but the first two are very important and have to be complimentary. It's an exciting time and so your ideas will continue to evolve as you see the space around you becoming more complete.. There are so many ways you can do things so absolutely start keeping notes on things you like.. : ))...See MoreWhich piece of renovation advice would you NOT pass on?
Comments (13)Probably the 'worst' advice, we had, was when renovating a house in Provence. Fitting everything into the high-ceiling bathroom including a shower area, meant we were persuaded to build in a bath across our nice window with shutters. (.."There may be someone who wants a bath"...). It was therefore never as easy to just walk up to the (wisteria-fringed) window and look out. In 10 years, we never (once) used the bath, far preferring the really nice walk in shower, as did all our guests. (The bath turned out to be a dust and spider catcher and was a (back) pain to clean). Lesson learned. Having renovated several properties and apartments since, we have simply removed baths and concentrated on installing lovely to walk in, spacious and safe showers with decent water pressure. We have never regretted putting in under-floor heating....See MoreNeed help in Cannes! Can't design my space!
Comments (9)Hi Heidi, I did a lot of work in Cannes last year, its a lovely location. The apartment looks wonderful, lots of strong architectural details, good proportions and light flooding into the space, a good start !! You really need someone you can discuss the project with who has the ability to visualise a concept based on your preferences and get those ideas down on paper. Your going to be inundated with designers who will pitch for this project. You need to consider four factors. 1 Do they have the ability to do the work. 2 Can they get on your wavelength so the interior captures your aspirations. 2 Are their fees reasonable and grounded in reality. 3 Can they present their ideas with artists impressions to illustrate their ideas. Taking into consideration all the above there is one final consideration. "Can you work with this person ?" This sounds like an abstract statement but an interior like this is the realisation of a dream for you, it should be a joy and as such you need to work with a designer that is both professional and on your wavelength from a personality perspective. On that basis you need to interview a quite a few designers. You need to be comfortable with that individual and have the confidence that he / she can produce a scheme that matches your tastes and have the ability to make it a reality. Here are a few details about myself: (Apologies about the bullet points) I'm BIID Registered - https://biid.org.uk/member/martin-nealon I have worked with luxury interior design for 30 years so have experience. I will quote a fixed fee for my design time, no hidden extras. My profit comes from design time only, I supply all fittings at trade and provide you with the trade invoices. (i.e. no mark up) I have two companies: www.3dinteriorillustration.co.uk The first is a design only company that can design the space, illustrate our ideas and provide mood boards for all rooms. This service is a fixed fee per room and is primarily for other interior designers but we offer this to private clients as well. We work on a fixed fee so you can see our charges up front and the visuals we produce will allow you to see the rooms in every detail. The designs are yours to keep so you have the option of retaining our services to do the interior or pass the drawings / mood boards to local companies to complete the works. www.angel-martin.com This company offers a full installation and co ordination service where we organise the project for you and oversee every aspect. I'm not going to pretend this is an economical approach, this type of project absorbs a lot of time but we do all the work for you. Thats my sales pitch over. Good luck with the project. With Kind Regards, Martin...See MoreDialwyn
