Comments (12)The house looks from the pictures to be a period property or period house styling, the front door style and the fact that you have a dado rail. Keeping that in mind you can go for a more contemporary colour scheme the grey you mentioned, using a two colour scheme as you have the dado rail and as was popular in that era. A slightly darker shade at the bottom a shade lighter on top. By using either Farrow and Ball for example skimming stone at the top and then Elphants breath at the bottom. Or you have Sanderson mist flower and smoke tree, Little Greene also have a great range shallows and Inox. You will need to get their colour charts and check the colours for your hall as light and position will effect the colours. I would agree if you go with the grey then a striped carpet incorporating greys would look lovely but if possible have it as a runner with rod, they come in chrome. This combines the house era with a contemporary touch. You can either keep the striped carpet throughout the hall or go for tiles. You have a dog so wood would get marked and scratched. As for the curtains not really great for a hallway maybe see if yo can use them elsewhere i the house. Plenty of fabric to make a bed runner and cushions. I've added a couple of images to help visuaise. hope this helps...See MoreHelp to modernise a 1970's house
Comments (33)Just another opinion...I like the suggestion that others posted to remove the bush and if possible, to put entry door in it's place, to remove the post and replace it with a support beam and brackets, replace garage door, add low wall to separate your driveway from the neighbor's, plant a dwarf tree in the front yard along with some edging plants... But with so many possibilities to choose from, perhaps you could accomplish your desire to make your home stand out from the others inexpensively by...painting over the white part of the house, the downspout directly above the canopy and the garage door to match the lightest brick color. Choose the darkest brick color for all of the other trim and windows. Patch and seal the driveway to freshen it (until you know if you will be permitted to do anything more permanent), definitely taking out the bush and doing some low cost planting just to add some color. It takes time to settle on your needs, style, budget, etc. But it's worthwhile to spend a little cash and effort to get a bit of satisfaction that things are looking better!...See MoreHelp with modernising a 1950's house
Comments (13)Here is a slightly different take on the downstairs, I think this would open up the downstairs, and means that you can access the downstairs toilet from the hallway as opposed to the kitchen like before, whilst also giving you a separate utility. I think the entrances to the lounge as they are at the moment are a bit strange, and moving the entrance as shown might help. It would be quite hard to knock the wall down to create one big open kitchen living dining as you would need to put a lot of steel in to hold up the first floor external wall (would have to see the property to be sure though). I think the entrance hall with glazed double doors in front will give you a great view and lots of light into the entrance hall. On the first floor I think the ideal solution has already been shown. If you have a larger budget however, you may consider splitting on of the bedrooms to create 2 en-suites but this would be a lot more work, in terms of drainage, plumbing and moving walls to get the correctly proportioned rooms. It also depends on how many bedrooms you use, you may not want to lose one to create 2 en-suites!...See MoreWhat would you do with this opening in the kitchen?
Comments (20)A big thank you all for your ideas and inspiration. I'm going to explore the idea of a flush, push to open door first as I think this enables me to keep the storage but meets my need to hide the clutter and keep clean lines. And yes the wall cupboard at the end is definitely going, there will be no wall level units on the entire run as I have full height larders on the wall opposite. Whilst I like the idea of using the alcove to display my "nicer" things I don't really have a selection of beautiful crockery to show off and I feel like I would end up buying stuff just to fill the space or the clutter would naturally migrate there!! Also the "window" on the other side used to be a window but is now an opening into a dining room extension so there is no way to really balance this with the alcove....See MoreA B
