Garden seating ideas

I'm looking to convert this corner into a seating area and replace a ricketty fence on a budget. Unfortunately I think the tree will have to go as not tall enough to stand under and can't dig down due to roots, but like the privacy it gives us. Any ideas gratefully received!

Comments (52)Personally I think the grass, yellow bricks and the fence are a bit too uninspiring. How about trying to break it up a bit - thin beds with climbers against fence and extra beds / pots / paths to add different levels. Think of cakes on a cake stand, the more levels, the better it looks. Red cedar slatted fence to replace the existing, trailing plants over the walls. Talk to a good gardener to talk about the right plants for their position and also consider doing a watering system to make it super low maintenance (they don't cost the earth). Comments (8)Hi Sue, thanks very much for your for your much appreciated comments, yes we now have realised that not trying too hard to cultivate this area and having a 'wild' element with meadow grass and a mown path is the best option. May I also ask you for advice regarding an old Box hedge we have on one of the terraced areas which has grown very thick and is quite high, we have tried to support it to tie it back in places but due to the position of our house we experience high winds at times and the hedge is really starting to lean over and it is quite a difficult hedge to continually trim and maintain. We are thinking of removing it in the winter as a 'project' and replacing it with a lower fence which we could then cover with climbing plants. Comments (13)Ok, it’s been a little while since we left off on the garden project, however as we’re approaching spring we’re keen to get the space cleaned up for spring. To open up the space we’ve removed the middle two bar fence and relocated the beech hedging to the screen the remaining fencing. The aim being to create more privacy and blend into the landscape behind. To add security we was thinking of adding gravel and rockery / water feature (not pond) to the righthand side near the gate. Opposite create a gravel area for the stone bench and dot a few ball shrubs and a Victorian lamp for interest. Uplighter’s will be used to illuminate the hedge. In the main section of the garden add one or two trees on the section on the righthand side to create some privacy from the neighbours line of sight into the bench area. Thereafter add more ball shrubs, lupine and foxgloves to create height. Apply a horizontal slat fence (painted a muted sage green) to tidy up the bad side of the existing fence. All borders will be edged with a slim red brick to match the house and make it easier for moving. Finally to mask the shed, introduce some rose bushes and lavender....See MoreAbi Smith

6 years agoI'd be inclined to use a horizontal design to match your new fencing. How comfortable it would be for a backrest I'm not sure but here's some ideas:
