Redesign and building regs

I know that this isn't strictly a design dilemma, but I'm hoping someone has experienced this and can help. We recently bought a flat in a fairly trcently converted Edwardian flat with some lovely features. We would like to do a lot of work to it, but have found out that ther are quite a few things which passed building regs after the conversion which shouldn't have. These are things like internal walls erected between the two flats instead of external walls, no sound proofing, internal bedroom with no exterior wall. Our neighbour's contacted the council which signed off the building regs on the conversion, but they said they won't do anything unless we sue them. We really want to start renovations, but want to see if we can hold anyone accountable before we start. Does anyone know if we can do anything about this?

We would suggest contacting your local authority and press for the issue to be resolved. Alternatively, you can contact the Department for Communities and Local Government for questions relating to government planning policies.

That's great, thank you! Presumably though, our ground floor bathroom will need an outward opening door? It doesn't currently have one but we will be moving the bathroom so I'm guessing any changes will require new regulations to be in place?

By adding an exit route out at basement level perhaps - egress windows or door out to garden etc ... also maybe by adding a mist/sprinkler system - but you ideally need to be talking to someone onsite who can see options that could relate to you and your situation.

Google it, price will be on your council's website. We put the application for building warrant in at same time as the planning application. It was maybe half the price of the planning app. One if them I'd based on cost of building works.

Thanks for comments, have considered pocket door but for room will be using a lot think prefer standard door, very tempted to have it open outwards but can see might get annoying as opening into what will be a narrow space and in mornings likely both be using at same time, Thanks, Lawrence
